Speaking to Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes on This Morning, Charles reflected on his time on the hit BBC competition Strictly Come Dancing, which he came sixth place in during the 2018 series alongside Karen Hauer. Ruth, who was also a contestant back in 2017, asked Charles how he handled the pressure of being on the show each week, and he confessed the nerves continued to get worse with each episode. He also unveiled Karen’s ritual as they prepped for the live shows, which he said she would “kill him” for revealing.

The 48-year-old, who played Ray Dixon in BBC soap EastEnders from 2012 to 2013, spoke of his friendship with Karen, 39.

“We just became close confidants,” he explained. “We laughed, we cried, we played together.”

“There’s been quite a few actors and performers on Strictly,” Ruth commented.

“And you’re used to being on stage and on TV studios – how nervous were you? Because I literally thought I was going to pass out with nerves in the first week.”

Charles seemed to understand Ruth’s struggle, replying: “Oh my goodness, Ruth it was ridiculous.

“Like you said, working on stage, usually you get less nervous as the shows progress.

“It was the complete opposite this time around – I got more nervous as it progressed and it didn’t help.”

He continued: “And Karen – don’t kill me for saying this – I remember every time we actually prepped for a performance she’d start giving the sign of the cross – I said Karen, you’re not helping’.

He laughed “How am I supposed to get confidence off that?”

“Oh my Lord,” Ruth remarked, as Charles appeared concerned at the admission. “Sorry Karen!” He added.

Ruth remarked: “My goodness, Anton [Du Beke] didn’t do that – like ‘please help me, here we go’.”

“She’s going to kill me,” Charles joked, before repeating: “Karen I’m sorry.”

“Karen’s wonderful, we love her,” Ruth stated. “Hello Karen if you’re watching.”

Although the celebrity line-up for this year’s show hasn’t yet been revealed, it has been confirmed Karen will be back with some fellow professionals.

But there will be some changes to the 2021 series. Anton will now be at the other end of the dance floor as he joins the judging panel.

The 55-year-old has taken part in every show since 2004 as a professional dancer, but will now replace Bruno Tonioli as a judge.

Janette Manrara will also be stepping away from the professional dance contestants.

Instead, the 37-year-old will be the new host of spin-off show, It Takes Two.

There will be four new professionals joining the likes of Karen, Giovanni Pernice, 30 and Oti Mabuse, 30.

Strictly Come Dancing is scheduled to BBC One in the autumn.
