Ben Shephard welcomed James, Christine, Mike and Samantha onto Tipping Point today as the players battled it out for a chance to win the highest possible jackpot of £20,000. However, in the first round, the ITV quiz host hit out at contestant James for making a huge blunder which cost him his position on the show.

In the first round, the four contestants were given the opportunity to answer questions to play their counters into the machine or nominate another contestant to use up a counter.

Mike got off to a great start by adding £400 to his jackpot but was the first player to use up his three counters.

Ben asked: “Davos Seaworth and a priestess named Melisandre appear in which HBO fantasy TV series adapted from novels by George RR Martin?”

Samantha answered correctly with “Game of Thrones” but said: “I think I’ll let James play his [counter].”

At this point in the game, both James and Christine had £0 with one counter each remaining.

“Here we go then James we need to get some money if we can, what are you thinking?” Ben asked.

The contestant opted for drop zone four which had been the chosen zone for all players up to this point.

“Okay let’s light up drop zone four please,” Ben said before immediately scolding James.

“Oh James, James, James! Oh James you stuffed that right up.”

James pressed his button too early leading to his counter riding on top of the others and failing to secure any money for his jackpot.

“They were close to going those ones,” Ben commented and James added: “I like to live on the edge.”

“You did,” the host remarked. “Unfortunately the edge didn’t deliver any counters I’m afraid and sadly nothing happens from that drop.”

“So your last counter goes into the machine, nothing comes out, you’ve got nothing in the bank so for the time being you are out,” Ben added.

Earlier in the round, James answered a question incorrectly and subsequently, Samantha answered her final question incorrectly meaning there were two counters up for grabs in the penalty pot.

However, Christine quickly nabbed those two counters sending James home with £0 in his jackpot.

Samantha was the next contestant to lose out on a place in the final before Mike defeated Christine.

Mike didn’t secure the jackpot counter in the final but was pleased when his decision not to take the three counter swap paid off.

After realising he would have lost everything if he had taken the swap, Ben asked: “How are you feeling?” And Mike replied: “Better.”

“Congratulations you’re leaving with £2150, have you enjoyed yourself?” The Tipping Point host asked.

“I’ve had a marvellous day thank you very much,” Mike replied

“It’s been lovely playing alongside you have a fantastic 50th wedding anniversary,” Ben added.

Tipping Point airs on weekdays on ITV at 4pm.
