The BBC was the first to halt production on its soaps, when it decided last week that EastEnders, Casualty, Doctors and Holby City would put a pause on filming temporarily.

ITV only decided this week to stop production on its soaps, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Channel 4 was the last to halt production, shutting down Hollyoaks just hours before PM Boris Johnson announced a strict nation wide lockdown.

In an effort to keep the soaps airing for as long as possible, EastEnders will now broadcast just twice a week on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Coronation Street and Emmerdale will air just three times per week each – going out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7pm.

And on Channel 4, Hollyoaks will broadcast Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4 and a first look episode following at 7pm on E4.

The reduced schedules mean the soaps should air until at least July when it is hoped production should be back underway to resume.

The lockdown has proved a boon for ratings as all soaps have recorded a jump in viewers, with EastEnder raking in 9.32m on Monday.

Thanks to the lockdown the big name stars of the soaps have been freed up from their usually gruelling filming schedules.

And they are passing the time in some interesting ways, from DIY projects to hairdressing…

Jack P Shepherd (David Platt in Corrie)

Jack's gone into lockdown with girlfriend Hanni – who also works on the soap – and she's got him hard at work doing DIY and building furniture.

The actor, who plays David in the soap, was also tasked with clearing up after their adorable pet chihuahuas and fixing a chair.

After 12 weeks in lockdown, will he be so good at cleaning, he'll be the next Mrs Hinch? Watch this space.

Max Bowden (Ben Mitchell in EastEnders)

Max has been making the most of his time at home, enjoying an isolation date night with girlfriend Danielle McCarney.

The 25-year-old shared a series of hilarious Instagram stories documenting the unconventional date which started at a makeshift bar, moved onto dinner before the "quarantwines" made Max merry and he got his groove on dancing in the loungeroom.

Jess Fox (Nancy Hayton in Hollyoaks)

The 36-year-old actress has seen the funny side of lockdown marking her plans on each day of her monthly calendar "isolation" in white marker.

When not making jokes, the recently engaged star is making sure she keeps on top her exercise routine, creating a home gym in her kitchen.

She will even be her own "body pump" instructor, sharing a photo of dumbbells, weights and barbells, "doing it," she wrote enthusiastically on Instagram.

Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden (Debbie Dingle and David Metcalfe on Emmerdale)

The married couple have got their hands full wrangling their three young children, Butler born in 2010, Bowie born in 2015 and 10-month old ace.

Charley has admitted to having to stop Ace from "rolling under the sofa".

She also took some time from her parenting to slam people allegedly taking part in the "coronavirus challenge" – Tik Tok users licking public spaces. "This is the most DISGUSTING thing I’ve ever seen," Charley wrote on Twitter.

Richard Blackwood (Felix Westwood on Hollyoaks)

While fans won't get to see Felix's debut until the end of the month the actor and comedian has been on a low-key solo lockdown. The 47-year-old made himself "dinner for one' consisting of spaghetting bolognaise and a glass of red wine, before he got comfy on his couch to watch some Spiderman.

Even though Hollyoaks' production is on pause, Richard has been busy promoting his debut and spent the day doing media interviews.

To top it all of he made "light work" of the a 50-push up challenge after designer Roy Ikoroha dared him to take it on.

Shiv Jalota (Vinny Panesar on Eastenders)

The relatively new addition to the EastEnders cast has admitted "quarantine lifestyle got me going craaaaaaaaaay".

But that did not stop him from taking part in the bizarre EastEnders challenges.

Actors from the show are competing to see how many books they can balance on their heads without dropping them.

The talented Shiv managed 15 before they toppled of his head onto his bed.

The strict lockdown comes as the number of coronavirus cases jumps to 8,077 in the UK.
The number of fatalities due to the virus is now 422, after the number of deaths jumped 88 in just 24 hours.
People will only be allowed to leave their home for essential supplies, one form of daily exercise or a walk, medical care or “absolutely necessary” work.
Anyone caught flouting the measures faces a fine of between £30 and £1,000 from Thursday, when a bill containing the new legislation to deal with coronavirus is expected to become law.
