What I Rent: Sydney, $1,000 a month for a three-bed apartment in Cleveland, Ohio

Welcome back to What I Rent, our weekly series that explores the reality of – you guessed it – renting.

Last time we were in Maida Vale, London, with Rosie, who pays £2,000 a month for a two-bedroom flat.

This week we’re a little further afield, taking a nose around an apartment by Lake Erie, in Cleveland, Ohio, US.

This is the space rented by Sydney, 26, who works as an onboarding specialist at a software company.

Having lived in the area for the past four years, Sydney, who also runs an interiors-themed Instagram, @wildbasildesign, was thrilled to find this property – especially as her cat, Basil, is allowed to share it with her.

Here’s what she rents.

Hi, Sydney! How much do you pay to live here?

I pay $1,000 a month for rent. Utilities are typically around another $150-$200 a month.

And what do you get for what you pay?

Three bedrooms, one bathroom, living room, kitchen, and a dining room.

Do you feel like you have a good deal?

For the location, and amount of space I have, and fact that it is pet-friendly without any additional deposit, I have an amazing deal. I am very lucky to have found this apartment.

How did you find the property?

I found this place while at a showing for another unit in this building that was $200 more expensive than mine, and I found that unit on Zillow.

I asked the person giving me the tour if they had any cheaper rentals available and there happened to be one in the same building. They gave me a tour of this unit and only difference was that the more expensive unit had hardwood floors, and the bathroom and kitchen were renovated, but honestly, I like the colors and view that mine have better.

This apartment wasn’t listed yet when I toured it and they were able to hold off on posting the listing until I heard whether or not I got approved for a different apartment, which ended up not working out. And here we are!

What do you think of the area?

I’m located in a suburb along Lake Erie, just outside of Cleveland, Ohio.

It’s pretty populated, but still quiet with plenty of trees and greenery throughout. It’s also very walkable and bikeable, and only about a mile away from the beach in one direction and an Ohio State Park in the other direction. There is a lot to do here.

Up until I moved here, I grew up and went to college in small towns, so being around the community this area offers has been a nice change.

Do you feel like you have enough space?

I do. I work from home and I’m here a decent amount of time, so having space to move around is something I am very fortunate to have.

How have you made this place feel like home?

There are a lot of handed-down pieces of furniture in my apartment. The couch in my living room was my sister’s when she moved into her first apartment. It’s from a local furniture store, she got it about 10 years ago and I’ve had it since I started renting.

The leather couch and chair in my sunroom were my grandma’s and were just in storage. There are also two bookshelves in my office my dad made me.

A lot of my décor and furniture is from Facebook Marketplace. I’ve accumulated and sold a lot of things throughout the years I’ve rented, and I think it has a good mix of new additions and things from family and previous rentals.

Have you found it difficult to decorate when renting? Is your landlord happy with you doing bits?

Thankfully they’ve been okay with me painting. I’ve received the following landlord reviews: ‘Looks amazing!’ and ‘Nice!’ – so, so far, so good.

Are there any problems with the apartment you have to deal with?

There are some problems with this place, but so far it has been much better than past rentals.

The worst thing so far has been a mouse in the kitchen cabinets.

Do you have plans to move again any time soon?

I have such a good deal here it wouldn’t make any sense to try and move again.

I’ve moved every year since 2014, and I really do love this place, so I’m ready to stay here for a while.

And what about buying a place?

Buying seems very out of reach right now, I’m happy to rent for the foreseeable future. I do love this area, but I don’t see myself living here long-term, so it’s nice to rent and have the ability to move cities easily.

Fair! Shall we take a look around?

What I Rent is a weekly series that’s out every Tuesday at 10am.

Check back next week to have another nose around a rented property.

How to get involved in What I Rent

What I Rent is Metro.co.uk’s weekly series that takes you inside the places people are renting, to give us all a better sense of what’s normal and how much we should be paying.

If you fancy taking part, please email [email protected] You’ll need to take pictures of your kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom, plus a few photos of you in your bedroom or living area.

Make sure you get permission from your housemates! You’ll also need to be okay with sharing how much you’re paying for rent, as that’s pretty important.

We’re not just after the prettiest places out there, by the way. We want the reality of renting, so if you’re currently renting a place you hate, we’d love to see that too (and sympathise greatly!).
