What are the Great British Bake Off challenges? The Signature Bake, Technical and Showstopper Challenges explained – The Sun

THE Great British Bake Off is coming back very soon with a brand new series for 2019.

The Bake Off challenges are what determines who gets to stay in the famous tent and who gets booted out. Here's a reminder of how they all work…

What are the Bake Off challenges?

Every episode of The Great British Bake Off features three challenges back-to-back.

While each week has a different theme, the contestants' performance regarding that week's theme is assessed using these challenges.

The themes can be anything from a long list including cake, biscuits, bread, royal, Tudor and pudding.

The fan-favourite show picks a Star Baker every week based on contestants' performances throughout the challenges.

Here's everything you need to know about the challenges…

The Signature Bake

The Signature Bake is all about bakers showing off their tried-and-tested recipes.

It also allows both the judges and the viewers at home to find out about the contestants' personalities, creative flair and baking ability.

Technical Challenge

This challenge is a tricky one as the bakers' have no idea what they will be asked to create before being given the recipe on the day.

This means they can't prepare for it and have to take the punches as they come.

If that wasn't difficult enough, the recipe given to the amateur bakers have either limited or minimal instructions, forcing the bakers to use their intuition and technical knowledge.

The finished products are judged blind and ranked from worst to best.

Showstopper Challenge

The Showstopper Challenge requires the bakers to go above and beyond with their creations.

The judges ask that their bakes are jaw-droppingly professional in both their appearance and their taste.

When does The Great British Bake Off start?

The Great British Bake Off 2019 doesn't have an official air date yet – but the 2018 series which was Rahul Mandal crowned champion, began on Tuesday, August 28 on Channel 4.

Bake Off usually airs at the same time each Tuesday until the grand final later in the year.
