A leading Coronation Street star is said to have "sobbed hysterically" and begged bosses not to sack him after being told he was about to be axed.
Top celebrity agent Melanie Blake has revealed the backstage story.
But the author stopped short of telling the show's fans who exactly it was.
She says the actor is still on the cobbles today – and pleading for mercy when the end was near worked a treat.
Her book Ruthless Women is all about a fake show but she draws on real experiences for the fiction.
There is a scene where a male soap star is being removed from fictional soap Falcon Bay.
But the actor breaks down and begs for his job – and she has now revealed the scene was inspired by a real-life account on the ITV favourite.
She told Digital Spy: "That's actually a true story. There's an actor on Coronation Street right now that literally begged a female producer.
"When she called him in to fire him, he literally begged her on his knees and sobbed hysterically.
"It was so awful that she actually ended up not firing him – and he's still in the show to this day.
"It's funny because I knew that story and then a few people who I know have read the book and said: 'Oh, that's him!'"
She went on to claim she was personally responsible for Gillian Taylforth coming back from the dead as Kathy Beale in EastEnders.
Agent Melanie also told how she played a big part in Danniella Westbrook returning to Albert Square after her role as Sam Mitchell was recast.
She added: "I've had some amazing power play experiences playing the soap roulette game. I don't think people understand how powerful agents are."
Danniella returned to EastEnders in 2009, though her most recent appearance was in 2016.
