The Last Kingdom season five is coming to Netflix and it marks the final instalment in the historical drama. The upcoming season will see the characters’ storylines wrap up in a satisfying way as the Anglo-Saxon saga comes to an end. A new addition to the final season is the older Aelfwynn, who is to be played by Phia Saban.

Who plays the older Aelfwynn in The Last Kingdom?

The series finale is expected to open with an extensive time jump as the main characters are starting to show their age.

There has been a number of recastings this time around, with new cast succeeding some of the child actors.

Aethelstan, the son of King Edward (played by Timothy Innes), was just a child in season four and he was played by Caspar Griffiths.

However, Harry Gilby will take over the role for the last outing as Aethelstan becomes a young man.

Aelfwynn is the daughter of Edward’s sister Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), and in the previous season, she was played by Helena Albright.

In season five, as the character becomes a young woman, she will be played by Phia Saban.

Saban attended the Guidhall School of Drama and she also has experience with the National Youth Theatre.

Whilst at Guildhall, she worked on an extensive number of productions and projects, from Antigone to Othello.

The British actress will be making her TV debut in The Last Kingdom, and this will be her first official credit.

She is on Instagram and she has been sharing some photos of herself with the cast off-screen.

The rest of her feed is dedicated to poetry, art, friends and family.

The official Instagram account for The Last Kingdom shared a photo of the actress in character.

They used the quote: “I am a woman of royal blood” with the caption “Strength comes from within”.

Her co-stars were quick to make her feel welcome, including Aelflaed actress Amelia Clarkson.

Aelswith actress Eliza Butterworth commented: “My stunning grandbaby!”

Fans believe Saban is the perfect choice for the role, with one saying: “Another great casting choice, looks like the adult version of S4 Aelfwynn.”

They have also commented on the fact she resembles her possible biological father, Erik (Christian Hillborg).

Aelfwynn had a large part to play in the fourth season, as she almost died after contracting ‘the sickness’.

The mystery illness forced villagers to flee from their homes and seek refuge at Winchester, where the king was staying.

She was left in the care of Osferth (Ewan Mitchell) and Eadith (Stefanie Martini) and they were able to keep her alive.

Viewers will be interested to find out what role the older Aelfwynn has to play in the final season.

The Wessex family has experienced plenty of feuds in the past, so there is a chance she could get entangled in a battle for power.

Saban is yet to post anything about her character on social media, but hopefully, more information will come to light soon.

A release date for season five is yet to be announced, but it will hopefully be late 2021 or early 2022.

The Last Kingdom seasons 1-4 are on Netflix now.
