The Handmaid’s Tale season five is on the way to Hulu and Channel 4, and June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) has new priorities. In season four, she got her revenge on Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), so fans will be interested to find out what her next mission will be. There is a possibility she will adopt his wife Serena Joy’s (Yvonne Strahovski) baby in the next outing.
Will June adopt Serena Joy’s unborn baby?
Serena was introduced to fans as the wife of Commander Fred and they used June as their Handmaid.
June was responsible for conceiving a child for the couple, due to Serena’s supposed infertility.
Season four saw some shocking twists for the husband and wife, who were on trial for crimes committed in Gilead.
A surprising revelation came whilst Serena was waiting for her trial, as she discovered she was pregnant with Fred’s baby.
June had a lot to hold over Serena, and it could impact her chances of becoming a mother.
Actress Strahovski has previously teased how Serena could lose her baby in the upcoming season.
She told Entertainment Weekly that Serena believes God will kill her baby if she does not beg for forgiveness.
Another punishment she could face for establishing Gilead is watching June take custody of her beloved child.
Losing her baby to June would be the ultimate kick in the teeth of Serena, who desperately wants a child.
Showrunner Bruce Miller has also teased that her baby could be taken away at some stage.
Back in May 2021, one fan said on Reddit: “It sounds like Serena will definitely have her baby taken from her.
“So either she goes to prison, is extradited back to Gilead and executed, or becomes a handmaid.”
June may be the one to raise Serena’s baby as she is still waiting to punish Fred’s wife.
Other fans have suggested Martha Rita (Amanda Brugel) will take the baby and actress Brugel wanted the same for her character.
Speaking to Elle, she said: “I’m hoping truly that Serena Joy’s son gets taken away from her, and then I get it.
“Because Serena Joy and everything they did with Gilead took my son away—we find that out in season two. So, an eye for an eye.
“I’m not going to take her son, but I won’t say no if I have a baby to raise, because again, that would give Rita purpose.”
Rita is more likely to adopt the baby than June, as she has plenty of other objectives to reach before the series ends.
If she wants to take down Gilead once and for all, she may not have time to take care of Serena’s child.
She is also hoping to be reunited permanently with her own daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake), and this is likely to be her priority.
Speaking about June’s motives for the next season, Miller said: “Is this the beginning of her finding justice or the end of her finding justice?
“If this is the beginning there is a long violent road ahead that’s not going to have a lot of room for husbands, babies, and friends.”
Considering this, it does seem as though June’s attention will be focused away from Serena’s baby.
She is likely to have to make a choice when it comes to her ultimate desires.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 will air on Hulu and Channel 4.
