'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' Hilarious Couple's Therapy Scene Was Improvised

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally reunited Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. The second episode got the two hashing out their issues in a hilarious couple’s therapy-type scenario. And as it turns out, most of the scene was improvised by Mackie and Stan.

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ star Amy Aquino breaks down that Sam and Bucky therapy scene

Amy Aquino plays Bucky’s court-appointed therapist, Dr. Christina Raynor, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. And in a recent interview, she revealed that her character put the two heroes together to get Bucky to open up.

“She uses Sam as the chink in the armor because this is a person he has a relationship with, and they had this shared relationship with [Steve Rogers’] Captain America, which is obviously the pivotal relationship in Bucky’s life,” Aquino told TV Line.

“She uses Sam as the battering ram to get through his armor, and it kind of works,” she added. “It’s only the beginning because that’s the only time she has, but knowing that he and Sam are going to be working together, she can hope that they keep opening up.”

Amy Aquino reveals Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan improvised their banter

Watching Sam and Bucky’s banter during their therapy scene was a treat for fans. And knowing it was improvised just further proves how well Mackie and Stan work together.

“Everybody was having fun with it,” Aquino said when talking about filming the scene in her chat with TV Line. “It was the moment that you could have fun with, but then they were able to let it go where it had to go, which is the big revelation that Bucky has.”

“My biggest challenge was not stopping them too early because [director Kari Skogland] was letting [Mackie and Stan] improvise,” she continued. “It would be insane not to with these two guys who are so smart and have such a strong relationship, because that’s where all of this gold was coming out.”

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ showrunner was thrilled with Mackie and Stan’s improvisational chemistry

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director, Kari Skogland, allowed Mackie and Stan to improvise scenes throughout the series. And when talking to Collider, she said their real-life chemistry translates seamlessly on-screen.

“It was a natural fit,” Skogland explained. “I thought, ‘Well, all I have to do is show up and point the camera,’ because they will take care of the rest. They’re terrific at ad-libbing and doing improv together, so they keep it very organic and real.”

“I always allow that, and I allow the collaboration and I trust that the actors, particularly these actors, because they’re both very thoughtful and very smart, are going to come up with nuances to the character while they’re in the moment, that you just can’t possibly think of whether you’re a writer or director or both,” she added. “It’s always an organic process of collaboration.”
