Season two of the hit Amazon Prime series The Boys is well underway and fans are enjoying it so far. One of the parts of the show they love (or, more accurately, love to hate) is the new villain, a superhero known as Stormfront. The character, portrayed by Aya Cash, has added a new element to the show that wasn’t there in season one.
As viewers attempt to unravel where the show is headed this season, some theories have begun to bubble to the surface as critics and fans speculate on what’s going to happen. One of those theories is that Stormfront may be Homelander’s biological mother. So is this the case?
(Note: if you haven’t gotten caught up on season two of The Boys yet, beware: there are spoilers ahead for all episodes through episode five of season two!)
The premise of ‘The Boys’
The Boys is based on a graphic novel series set in a world where superheroes exist. Though the superheroes appear to be do-gooders on the outside, in reality, they’re narcissistic, selfish, and uncaring about the innocent people they put in harm’s way. They’re led by the evil Homelander, head of a group known as The Seven.
A ragtag group of misfits known as “The Boys” attempts to stop them. That group is led by Billy Butcher (whose wife was sexually assaulted by Homelander) and also includes individuals named Mother’s Milk, Frenchie, Hughie, and Kimiko (also a “supe”). The supes have the backing of an evil corporation known as Vought.
Who is Homelander?
Homelander is the show’s main villain. A combination of Superman and Captain America if they were ungodly evil, Homelander was created in a lab and raised without love or affection. Because of this, he’s developed psychopathic and sociopathic tendencies.
While he often rescues those in need, it’s done simply for appearances. He’ll indiscriminately kill at a moment’s notice if the mood strikes him.
Because of his twisted upbringing, Homelander seems to long for a home life and a family. He also has an odd obsession with breast milk and has an uncomfortable fixation on identifying a mother figure in his life.
Who is Stormfront?
According to The Boys wiki, in the comics, Stormfront was a Nazi-created supe from the 1940s who was cloned to create Homelander. In the TV show, Stormfront appears to be a young woman. She’s sassy and snarky and is eventually revealed to be virulently racist as well.
Stormfront mimics Homelander’s disdain for non-supes, though she expresses an outwardly crowd-pleasing public persona. Despite the likable image she portrays, Stormfront displays some awful traits privately.
She recklessly murders innocent people and makes racist comments to ethnic minorities. In episode five of season two, she and Homelander finally join forces, hooking up in a rather disturbing, sadomasochistic sex scene.
Is Stormfront Homelander’s biological mother?
A Reddit thread talks about a fan theory for Stormfront and Homelander’s relationship. In the comics, Homelander is a clone of Stormfront so one could argue there’s a DNA link that may not be exactly parental.
In the show, Homelander is clearly longing for a mother figure in his life. We’ve also discovered at this point that Stormfront was formerly a superhero named Liberty many years ago. That suggests she may in fact be ageless, or at least age much slower than most people.
The theory posits that Stormfront may be Homelander’s biological mother. The theory is almost too perfect not to be true. Consider that it would put a fine point on Homelander’s Oedipal complex. It would also make sense that Stormfront would be much older — perhaps tying back to a World War II-era Nazi experiment, like the comics version of the character.
Only time will tell if Stormfront and Homelander are mother and son, but this theory looks like it may be a winner. That said, season 2 episode 5 ended with the two getting into a sexual relationship. Should Stormfront be Homelander’s mother, this would mean they accidentally got involved in an incestual relationship — an unsettling plotline that could serve to enrage the characters and shock viewers.
Another theory is that the parent company that created supes took portions of Stormfront’s DNA to create Homelander. So while he’s not exactly her child, they could be heavily related.
