Succession’s third season was one of the most explosive yet, with the Roy family in a full-blown civil war. Of course, one of the most shocking moments was the apparent death of Kendall Ray (played by Jeremy Strong), leaving fans questioning the future of the series. However, the season finale of the HBO show finally gave viewers some answers.

Did Kendall Roy die in Succession season three?

Kendall Roy has had a tough time throughout the three seasons of the series, arguably the toughest of all the family.

In the first season, he struggled desperately to take control of the family business and despite gaining some support, he ultimately lost.

His father, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) then fired him from the company, leading him into a spiral of drugs, booze, and general depravity.

At the end of the first season, he almost drowned in a car accident while drunk and high, and now some fans believe this could have been foreshadowing the events seen at the end of season three.

In the penultimate episode of the season, Kendall’s fate was left open, with it looking as though he could have drowned in a swimming pool.

However, the season finale revealed that he didn’t die, narrowly avoiding the same grim fate he dodged two years prior.

Yet, it opened the door to a lot of questions, with it looking likely that someone intentionally left him in the pool alone.

In this show, it could be anyone that may have wanted to see him drown, as each Roy member and beyond is backstabbing and bitter.

At the moment, his siblings Connor (Alan Ruck), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook) seem genuinely concerned for his wellbeing.

They believe he attempted suicide and held an intervention to try and get him over his ongoing addiction issues.

In the meantime, Jeremy Strong looks set to return as Kendall for the recently announced fourth season.

The former heir to the Roy throne is now in a darker place than ever, and it is likely things will only get worse for him in the fourth season.

What will season four be about?

HBO has not revealed any details about the plot of season four, with it still in early development.

What is known is that the show is nearly its natural endpoint, with the showrunners hinting that the fourth season could be the last.

Speaking to The Times, executive producer Georgia Pritchett said: “I think the maximum would be five seasons, but possibly more like four.

“We’re at the end of filming season three, so at this point, Jesse is saying only one more. But that happens every time. We’ve got a good end in sight.”

Of course, the premise of the show still needs to be fulfilled, with no obvious successor to Logan coming forth.

All his children come with their own pros and cons, but what has become clear is that they are all equally vindictive.

With billions of dollars on the cards, the race to the finish line will likely be more chaotic and brutal than ever before.

Kendall is currently at a crossroads, he will either step up and rid himself of his demons or continue to slide down his dark path of despair.

Succession seasons 1-3 are available to watch on HBO in the USA and NOW in the UK
