Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Ian Beale’s (Adam Woodyatt) friendship in EastEnders dates back to the very first episode of the show.
The two of them have been through so much over the years, and yet have always managed to come out the other end with their friendship still intact.
However, with Sharon now knowing the truth about how her son Dennis Rickman (Bleu Landau) died, it was revealed during yesterday’s Christmas episode that her and Phil (Steve McFadden) were the two people behind Ian’s deadly attack.
Sharon has at last discovered what really happened during the final moments before her son died, and as Ian was the person responsible for locking the young teen in the room on the boat, this longstanding friendship won’t ever be the same again.
Actress Letitia Dean said: ‘In many ways Sharon and Phil are a team – they can slip back into that quite easily and when their plan doesn’t go quite to plan, Sharon isn’t going to give up.
‘She is completely driven at this point – not thinking of anything else – she just wants Ian gone. It’s like he’s the final piece of grief that’s weighing her down – she’s certain that his death will cause some sort of equilibrium to Denny’s and at last she’ll have her revenge.’
Understandably, Sharon is distraught over Denny’s death, so has her attack on Ian been fuelled purely by the grief she’s experiencing? Letitia divulged her thoughts on where her character is at currently:
‘Absolutely! Sharon was trapped in a cycle of sorrow after Denny’s death – as well as struggling to cope with Albie and going on that journey to accept her new son. Albie coming into the world on the day that Denny left it was nothing short of horrific for Sharon – it should have been one of her happiest days so it’s not something that she’s able to move on from.
‘But life does go on and Sharon’s has had put on a brave face behind the bar most of the time, but on the inside she’s still absolutely broken. When she realised the truth, she channelled all of that and it becomes poisonous – quite literally!’
Letitia continued her chat, adding how despite the fact that Sharon has gone quite far this time, she’s not set to stop anytime soon, even when Phil decides to back out of the plans:
‘Sharon is so far gone, wanting revenge for her son that she barely even bats an eyelash before deciding that she’ll do it instead. She feels let down by the one person that has any idea how she feels about it all – if anything Phil backing out spurs her on.’
