Journalist Simon McCoy is leaving BBC News after 18 years.

The 59-year-old television star took to Twitter to confirm the news on Thursday morning after a co-star wished him luck on his final week on the show.

Floor manager Niall Jackson tweeted: "If you think he’s a handful on-screen, imagine what he’s like off it? Only got to floor manage 4 years of his 17+ at @BBCNews so was nice to do his final week.

"Made the dreariest of heavy news days instantly more manageable. May the road rise up to meet you @BBCSimonMcCoy Sláinte."

He replied: "Thank you Niall, I shall miss you".

After a follower asked whether he was leaving, the newsreader explained: After 18 years… last day today."

Simon joined first joined the BBC in 2004 and took over the morning slot on BBC News the following year alongside Kate Silverton.

He went on to become the main presenter on the BBC News at One last March, and present the weekdays 2pm until 5pm slot.

As well as sharing news with the nation, he has also been a part of some of BBC News' most iconic moments.

Simon is known for his hilarious presenting style while stationed outside the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, awaiting the birth of Prince George.

Fans will remember when Simon went viral when he picked up a refill pack of A4 printer paper instead of his iPad while live on air.

A spokesperson for the BBC said at the time: "‘This morning as Simon McCoy was preparing to introduce this story, instead of picking up his tablet to hold as he went to air, he mistakenly picked up a ream of paper that was sitting next to it.

Earlier this year, Simon's deadpan joke about the "highlights of 2020" had viewers in stitches.

Speaking on New Year's Day, he told BBC News viewers that there would be a "special programme" with footage of all the best parts of one of the most miserable years many people can remember.

"Let's just have a look," he said.

Nothing showed up on the screen behind him, and seconds later he faced the camera and said: "Exactly. It's farewell to 2020."
