It Takes Two host Janette Manrara was joined by Rose Ayling Ellis and dance partner Giovanni Pernice on Thursday’s instalment of the BBC Two show to discuss their time during training ahead of the weekend. As they set their eyes on the coveted Glitterball Trophy, the dancing duo will be taking on the Argentine Tango and a classic ballroom Waltz. All pairs will perform not one, but two dance routines for the first time in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing. Rose, who plays Frankie Lewis in BBC soap opera EastEnders, discussed how her extensive training led to a painful injury.

Giovanni said to Janette: “She didn’t want to practice with the [practice] mat.”

He continued: “She said it was hurting more trying to arrive on the mat, so we tried without.”

The Italian dancer confessed: “A few times she went on the floor.”

Rose revealed how the execution of the lift in rehearsals caused her physical pain.

The soap star said: “I had a big bruise on my hip.”

It Takes Two star Janette seemed concerned as she replied: “Oh, really?”

Rose explained how the repetition of the lift during rehearsals left her with an injury.

The actor was given a practice mat to land on, but the support was more of a hindrance after it left her sore.

While Rose demonstrated her underarm to Janette, she said: “[The] pressure is bashing this [part] and I didn’t like it,”

The couple began to rehearse the lift in a far more adventurous way than before.

Rose described to BBC audiences how she practised for the lift:  “I can jump and he [Giovanni] just slides me, it’s less painful.”

In jest, Giovanni added: “Just slide me around, so easily,” before the Frankie Lewis actor assured her partner, “it will be fine”.

Janette turned to the dance professional and asked: “Giovanni, did you at any point in the week feel that you weren’t going to be able to execute that lift?”

The Open Latin Dance Champion admitted: “Yes, until the day before.”

To which the host replied: “Oh, wow! That close?”

The 31-year-old performer confessed: “Yes, actually in the dress rehearsal.”

He continued: “It is one of those, you have to nail it because if you can’t catch her, then something can go very wrong.

“At this stage in the competition, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t,

“So I was worried about it, but then the dress run [we] nailed it,” Giovanni added.

He announced: “[I said] just do one more time, and we did it!”

After successfully executing the lift in their final moments before the live show, Rose was pleased the lift would go ahead.

Rose stated: “I really wanted to keep it, I didn’t want to change it.”

The pair will return to the dance floor on Saturday in the hopes of making the Strictly final next week.

Strictly: It Takes Two airs weekdays at 6:30pm on BBC Two.
