The CW series Riverdale had a reboot last week when there was a seven-year time jump with all the major characters now in their mid-20s. The all-American town was in a state of dilapidation too with Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) bringing his friends back together to save their former home. Along with the core four and the town much changed, many of the characters had also seen a shift.

What happened to Pop Tate in Riverdale?

Among the differences was the change in ownership of Riverdale’s diner Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe, which has been in the Tate family for generations.

The diner was owned by the friendly Pop Tate (Alvin Sanders) but all of this changed after the time jump.

Archie rocked up in town and made his first port of call the diner, only to find a new face behind the counter.

After asking the waitress where Pop was, she asked if he hadn’t heard about what had happened to Pop.

Her words clearly concerned Archie but also fans, who feared the elderly diner worker might have died during the time jump.

Luckily, viewers’ fears were allayed after Pop made an appearance later in the episode.

From the looks of it, Pop was calling it quits after so many years of hard work and handing over the reins to his granddaughter Tabitha Tate (Erinn Westbrook).

Archie threw Pop a retirement party as the diner and used it as an excuse to rally up his friends to help him out.

The final scene showed Pop very much alive and well even if it was hanging up his apron.

From the looks of it, Pop isn’t going to be in Riverdale very much anymore now his character has given up the business.

Tabitha also seemed to have a handle on the business as the new manager even though she lost of her employees Lynette “Squeaky” Fields (Skylar Radzion) decided to leave.

Sadly, it was implied things ended badly for Squeaky after she decided to hitchhike across the country, only to be picked up by a sinister trucker and never seen again.

The CW confirmed in 2020 it had cast Westbrook as Tabitha with Deadline describing the character as “ambitious and entrepreneurial”.

Tabitha will be hoping to turn the diner into a franchise even though Riverdale is ailing around her and falling into decline.

Westbrook is perhaps best known for her role in Fox’s The Resident and Netflix’s Insatiable.

Season five is really going to up the ante with a new murderer on the loose known as the Trashbag Killer or TBK.

TBK held Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) hostage for two weeks after she trailed him to his lair rather than waiting for FBI back up.

Betty has been deeply scarred by the ordeal but it looks like there will be more going on.

Riverdale’s show runner Robert Aguirre Sacasa teased fans would see a major death at the end of season five.

He told TV Line: “I think it’s in the next episode that you’ll see that mystery is really entwined with the possibly tragic fate of one of our major characters that we’ve known since season one.”

Riverdale season 5 airs on The CW on Wednesdays at 7/8c and Netflix UK on Thursdays
