Just a few days after setting foot in the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! castle, Good Morning Britain star Richard Madeley had to pull out of the ITV contest. Following a health scare in the early hours of the morning, Richard was taken to hospital for tests but is now “as fit as a fiddle” – although his venture out of the castle broke the Covid bubble the celebs had formed. Opening up to Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid on Monday’s GMB about the ordeal, the former This Morning star revealed all.

“The penny didn’t drop but not much was functioning at all,” Richard began as he delved into the morning in question.

He added: “I think what happened to me was, I think I got dehydrated, I think that’s all it was.

“And dehydration, if anyone’s ever suffered from it, it’s actually quite disturbing.

“Basically I think I’d been up for about 20 hours the day before and the day before that, we were having very long days and sleeping quit late.”

The I’m A Celeb str continued: “We don’t have watches in there but I don’t think I got to bed until about 4-4:30 in the morning.

“I knew I was feeling thirsty and I’m quite bad at remembering to drink actually, to drink water and as I actually snuggled into my sleeping bag and it was freezing,

“I thought, ‘Ah, I haven’t had a big drink for a while – I’ll do it when I wake up’. And the next thing I knew I was sitting there babbling, I don’t know, I was talking nonsense…”

“So incoherently?” GMB’s Ben chipped in to ask as Richard continued: “Yeah, I basically woke up, I didn’t know where I was, I didn’t know what was going on and I could barely string a sentence together.

“You know, as it turned out it was harmless, there was nothing wrong.

“I went to the hospital and had all the tests you could imagine. I had tests up here, I had bloods (and) all the rest of it.

“And I got 100 percent clean bill of health and they were happy for me to go back in, and by then I’d had a cup of tea and a drink of water and I was back on the rails.”

Praising ITV, Richard admitted there was no safe way for him to be reinstated to the show.

“But ITV has a proper duty of care,” he went on. “And if you’ve got somebody in that castle talking nonsense at 4:30 in the morning – well, that’s typical of me anyway, but they’ve got to check it out.”

Recalling the moment he was told he wouldn’t be going back in, Richard said: “But it wasn’t until actually that I was getting the meds back and they say you’re okay to go back in that I suddenly thought, ‘Can I go back in actually, I’ve broken the bubble?’

“And then I spoke to a producer and they were very upset, they said ‘we’ve been racking our brains but there’s just no way’.”

While his time on the ITV show was cut short, Richard did add that the strict rice and beans diet had resulted in weight loss as well.

As the chat drew to a close, Richard commented to Ben: “I’ve lost a lot of weight,

“Lost about three or four pounds,” he added as Ben said he noticed the difference.

As of Monday, all of the celebrities have been evacuated from Gwyrch Castle as Storm Arwen wreaks havoc on the Welsh weather.

ITV is yet to announce when and if the contestants will return to the castle.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
