This Morning favourite Dermot O’Leary and Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page were joined by TV chef James Martin on Sunday’s The Pet Show alongside his pet pooch, Cooper. The energetic cocker spaniel and his owner took a seat on the sofa as James recalled his fondest memories with his pet as well as taking on the ITV show’s own canine obstacle course.

However, when recalling one particularly “cheeky” story about Cooper, The Pet Show’s Dermot didn’t know where to look.

The moment came when Joanna asked: “He seems quite cheeky. I mean, does he get up to all-sorts, what’s he like?”

The Saturday Morning host replied: “Oh spaniels are, yeah. This one particularly.

“The worst one was I disappeared off to work one day and I loaded the stuff in the back of the car, it was about 250 miles to the restaurant.”

Joanna let out a gasp while Dermot could see where the story was heading and began to chuckle.

James continued: “And I didn’t realise that he was in the back of the car until about three-quarters of the way of the journey.

“His head suddenly popped up, it was just him.

“He’d jumped in the back of the car. I’d just shut the door, got in the car and drove off and then…”

Dermot leant back in his chair and threw his head in his hands while a shocked Joanna questioned: “What did you do?”

“Didn’t do anything,” James replied. “He just came to the restaurant with me.”

Dermot then weighed in for answers as he queried: “Did he fall asleep in the back of the car and then just woke up (and said): ‘Alright, Dad’?”

James explained: “Yeah, he sleeps in the back of the truck, he’s got his own little kennel.”

Later in the show, James and Cooper took on The Pet Show’s obstacle course.

Complete with a seesaw, tunnel and selfie stage, the ITV chef and his pooch had to complete the run in the fastest time possible.

However, things were far from plain sailing as Cooper incurred two time penalties for failing to complete certain stages.

Nevertheless, with a time of one minute 22 seconds, James and Cooper topped the show’s leaderboard above its previous guests.

James erupted in celebration as he and Cooper received a round of applause from the studio audience.

And before signing off, James gave a touching speech about how much his canine pal meant to him.

“He’s the best thing I’ve ever had,” James told Joanna and Dermot. “He’s worth every hour, everything.”

The Pet Show continues Sundays on ITV.
