Is Ncuti Gatwa leaving Sex Education as Eric Effiong?

Sex Education digs deep into the sexual questions and experiences of teenagers, brought about with the help of the socially awkward Otis Milburn (played by Asa Butterfield). Thanks to some knowledge provided by his sex therapist mum Jean (Gillian Anderson), Otis has found his calling and a new level of respect from his peers. Before his therapy sessions started, Otis only had his fabulous friend Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) by his side.

Is Ncuti Gatwa leaving Sex Education as Eric Effiong?

Otis and Eric were as thick as thieves, Otis being the more reserved of the pair while Eric preferred to show off, especially through his colourful and expressive outfits.

As Otis was starting up his sex advice clinic, Eric was getting to know his bully Adam Groff (Connor Swindells).

He later found out that Adam was bisexual and was trying to hide his feelings for Eric by beating him up.

Things looked rocky for a while but at the end of season two, Adam confessed how he really felt in front of the whole school, so it looked like this was the beginning of a new relationship.

Fans have been excited for season three of Sex Education to come out for months now.

There was even more delight when Netflix released a teaser in July which revealed exactly when the comedy-drama would be returning.

The promo for series three is an advertisement for Moordale Secondary with the majority of the main cast having a starring role.

All but Eric who doesn’t feature at all in the trailer, leaving viewers questioning whether he will be back for series three.

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “Where the hell’s Eric? I need me some Eric!”

Another viewer said that the streaming service had “people crying” over Eric not appearing in the trailer.

So is actor Ncuti Gatwa really not returning for the third season of Sex Education?

Thankfully, there is nothing to worry about as the 28-year-old actor will in fact be back for the September return date.

An official reason as to why Eric isn’t in the trailer hasn’t been given. A similar concern was raised as Otis’ mum Jean Milburn did not appear in the short clip either.

Nevertheless, Gatwa will once again portray the quirky character who will be experiencing some new challenges.

Gatwa has openly talked about what viewers can expect from his character when series three begins.

He explained that Eric will be heading “back to his culture” as he continues to try and find himself.

Speaking to Metro, Gatwa said: “Those scenes were very special.

“Just kind of having a set where the majority of people were Black was really great and really powerful and represented Eric’s culture and his family.

“Those are always very profound moments.”

Sex Education season 3 will be ready to watch from Friday, September 17, on Netflix.
