Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard is one of 10 celebrities in the cast of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here this year and the soap stalwart certainly made her mark in the first episode of the new series on Sunday night.
The first episode of I’m A Celebrity 2020 saw Beverley take part in two challenges, settle into life at the castle in Wales – oh and ask broadcaster Victoria Derbyshire to check her bra for bugs.
But with Beverley spending weeks holed up in a castle in Wales filming I’m A Celebrity, does that mean that her Corrie character – Liz McDonald – has left the Cobbles?
Has Liz McDonald left Coronation Street?
It was announced in November 2019 that Beverley Callard would be leaving her role as Liz McDonald on Coronation Street after 30 years on the soap.
Liz’s exit was referenced by her son Steve (Simon Gregson) in August, when he mentioned that his mum has moved to Spain.
Beverley first appeared on Corrie in October 1989 and show bosses said that she decided to leave the soap ‘to take on new challenges’ (hello I’m A Celebrity!)
While discussing her decision to leave the soap after three decades, Bev praised Coronation Street for providing roles for older women, something she says is seriously lacking elsewhere in the industry.
She said: ‘There’s very little work in our industry for women over 50, but I’m 62 and recently I was doing three jobs at once. It made me realise how I was privileged to have the opportunity to do so when so many women my age no longer get the chance.’
MD of Continuing Drama and Head of ITV in the North John Whiston said: ‘With the character of Liz, Beverley Callard has gifted to Coronation Street 30 years of brilliant drama, comedy and everything in between. Whether it’s sharing a wicked joke with Eileen, raising an arch eyebrow behind the bar of the Rovers or giving some feckless man the full force of her tongue, Liz is a true Coronation Street icon.
We haven’t quite seen the last of Liz, as Beverley confirmed in an interview with Loose Women that she will be returning to the soap briefly to film a big exit for her character.
‘I will go back maybe the beginning of next year, so they will see a bit more of Liz,’ she revealed. ‘It’s going to be very dramatic, I believe.’
