Presenter Paul Martin took a trip to Longleat in Wiltshire for Tuesday’s rerun episode of BBC’s Flog It! The antique expert was amazed when guest Jane approached him for a valuation of her family heirloom of an Aviation watch. After co-star David initially evaluated the watch between £400 and £600, he was left feeling stunned at how much the watch sold for at the auction – and feared the backlash he’d receive from his colleagues.

Being joined by Paul and David, Jane’s watch was the last item of the day at the auction, and the three were excited to see how much it would be sold for.

Paul said: “Well, what we want to know is where has it been all of this time?”

Jane revealed: “I did have it hanging on a little hook by the bed for a little while, a bedside clock so I could use it and listen to it.”

Paul noted that the clock face had a large dial and expressed it was a “practical” clock to which Jane added: “I think it’s very beautiful I love the figures on it.”

David joked: “Too late to change your mind,” to which the bidding began, and it started off at a staggering £2,500.

Straight away, Jane, David and Paul were stunned with the valuation with David expressing: “I’m shocked, speechless.”

As the auction got underway, the auctioneer began reading out the climbing amounts reaching £3,650 before David was left feeling a little overwhelmed.

“I’m going to get the mickey taken out of me by my mates, they’ll all be ringing me up saying you got that wrong, David.”

As the clock reached £4,000, Jane was gobsmacked and exclaimed: “I’ve got a grandfather clock that needs mending, and I thought a few hundred pounds might do that, but… I can do a bit more now.”

Eventually, the watch was sold for £4,100, leaving Jane gobsmacked at the valuation and David leaving a little embarrassed.

Paul explained: “The hammer has gone down, it is a big, solid sound. I am over the moon for you.”

However, Paul couldn’t resist teasing David as he remarked: “I really am so pleased I didn’t value that one.

“Hey, but that’s auctions for you, that’s the way it goes now you have got a longcase clock to restore and repair.”

She happily agreed: “Yes, so I’m really good, I’m really glad about that.”

Paul continued: “And lots of spending money to treat the rest of the family members, yeah? That’s a great return.”

Before the auction, Jane explained to David: “It came from my great aunt’s family, it was just found, eventually when we cleared the home.

“I’ve no idea who used it, or why they would have had it, I just thought it was a very beautiful thing.”

David went on to evaluate the watch and said: “I think this is really going to do quite well, my view is that we should estimate it at £400 to £600.

“Now, watches that are very similar to that have made considerably more than that in the past 12 months.

“I am optimistic it will do better than that, but I think that that is a sensible amount, we don’t want to estimate too high, and we want people to know it’s for sale.”

David asked if they could place a reserve of £400 on the watch, which Jane was hesitant about at first but finally agreed.

However, given the watch’s haul in the auction room, she needn’t have been.

Flog It! airs Tuesdays at 5:15pm on BBC Two.
