EastEnders might have gone off the air for the first time in history, but the soap will return to screens later this year, and star Kellie Bright has teased what’s to come.
The BBC soap shut down production amid the coronavirus pandemic, and episodes were subsequently rationed out at two a week as opposed to the usual four in an effort to ensure it remained on the air for as long as possible.
The final pre-lockdown episode aired last Tuesday, meaning that — for the first time in the soap’s 35-year run — it has gone off the air.
The serial drama has been given the green light to resume filming, and Kellie — who portrays Linda Carter — told BBC Breakfast: ‘Well, we go back very very soon, I can tell you that much.
‘We’ll be back filming towards the end of this month, and I’m really looking forward to it — I’ve seen the first few scripts now, and they are really exciting.
EastEnders’ final pre-lockdown episode ended in an explosive fashion — culminating with one of the most incredibly Doof Doof cliffhangers in recent memory, which has left fans craving the next chapter.
If, like the rest of the nation, you’re incredibly excited to see what’s next, then it appears as if we’re in for a treat, as Kellie teased what’s to come.
She said: ‘It’s coming back with all the bells and whistles, and everything an EastEnders fan is going to want from the show is there.
‘It will come back on air in the autumn, I know that.’
Of course, social distancing will be implemented from here on out, meaning that filming will no doubt be a different experience for the actors when they return to work.
Kellie continued: ‘It’s going to be really challenging. It’s going to be very different filming now, but I’m really grateful that we can actually do it and have a go.
‘So many of my friends in this industry — their work has just stopped, and they’ve no idea when it’s going to start again because so many can’t start again, so I think we’re very lucky that we can actually get the ball rolling.
While EastEnders has gone on hiatus, fans will be able to get their Walford fix in the form of new spin-off series Secrets From The Square, which kicks off tonight.
Kellie said: ‘If you are a fan of EastEnders, then you will love Secrets From The Square — and the nostalgic episodes! I mean, I for one am so excited about watching them!’
Us too, Kellie!
EastEnders: Secrets From The Square kicks off tonight at 8pm on BBC One. The iconic Den and Angie two-hander episode from 1986 will be re-shown tomorrow at 7:30pm on BBC One.
