Denise Welch believes the rules the government set during lockdown were "ridiculous."
On todays episode (13 April) of Loose Women, the panelists began discussing Boris Johnson's recent fine for breaching lockdown rules.
When asked if she thinks Boris Johnson should resign, Denise, 61, said "no", but revealed she was "in contact with people who were in contact with people in Downing Street" and was told that no masks were ever worn, calling it "a different world out there."
The actress said: "People had to say goodbye to friends and close family while they continued like nothing was going on."
Speaking about Boris Johnson's controversial gathering with a birthday cake, the former Coronation Street actress said: "Well I would've welcome it, because I thought the rules were ridiculous."
Detectives have reportedly been investigating a string of other parties held at Downing Street – called Operation Hillman.
Fellow panelist Jane Moore revealed that this operation discovered that Boris allegedly attended at least six other parties during lockdown.
Jane posed the question of whether "this is the most innocuous one that has been floated out" and whether "there's more to come" to which Denise replied: "Of course there is."
The conversation sparked fury amongst Twitter users, with several strongly disagreeing with Denise's opinion on his resignation.
One user said: "It's not so much about the birthday party, it's about deliberately misleading parliament and the breach of the ministerial code. He should resign."
Another agreed and penned: "It’s not about should he resign because he went to a party he should resign because he lied in parliament whilst stood at the dispatch box! He he can lie there he can lie about anything!!"
A third vented: "You can't make the rules & then break them. Families didn't see loved ones. Women went to hospital for labour/pregnancy loss alone, I was one of them. Weddings were cancelled, funerals had limited numbers & socially distanced, so 100% yes they should resign."
Meanwhile a fourth said: "I’m vulnerable & had to stay in doors without seeing me 88yr old father all through lockdown whilst Boris & Rishi were partying so my vote is yes Boris should resign & Rishi should be sacked. One rule for them & another for us. All those people who had fines, should be reimbursed."
