Danny Dyer denies cast fallouts amid EastEnders exit

EastEnders star Danny Dyer has addressed the news he’s leaving the BBC One soap.

On Saturday (January 8), news broke that Danny would be saying goodbye to the soap after playing Mick Carter for 9 years.

A spokesperson for EastEnders confirmed Danny was leaving, telling Metro.co.uk: ‘Danny will be leaving EastEnders when his contract comes to an end later this year.

‘Danny has made Mick Carter an iconic character which we shall always be grateful for, however we won’t be saying goodbye just yet as there’s still quite some time – and plenty of explosive drama for Mick – to come before he departs Walford.’

The actor discussed the recent announcement on his podcast with daughter Dani ‘Sorted with the Dyers’.

He said: ‘It’s strange to think people will debate whether they are happy or sad about the news. And the news being that I am leaving EastEnders. I’m very lucky, I’m very grateful – when you’re in a job like a soap your contract comes up for renewal and every time my contract has come up for renewal, they’ve asked me to stay and I’m very grateful for that because I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. It’s very tough.

‘So I always debate whether I want to sign again and I’ve been contemplating a while now about maybe it’s time to roll the dice, take the leap, I’ve not been coached by anybody, that’s not true at all, the news is that I’ve not decided to renew my contract, that’s all, it’s not because I’ve fell out with anybody, that job has been amazing for me, I love everybody, it’s an important part of television. I’m grateful for the beautiful years I’ve had there and I’m going to miss the people massively. I know there will be some people f***ing jumping for joy at the idea of me leaving EastEnders, there will be others who will be quite upset, disappointed.’

He continued: ‘I just want to say, and put it on record here, there is no big story around it other than the fact I’ve decided to go off and try something else. I still don’t think I’ve found…I’m 44, I’ve played Mick for 9 years and I think it needs to be rested for a bit. I’m still looking for that defining role and I don’t know what that is yet. I’ve always been quite ambitious, I know the landscape has changed slightly but I want to go out there and have a little go and the only way I can do that is walk away from EastEnders.’

‘I just want to put my little version out there. It is true. It gives me a weird little feeling to think I’m going to walk away from a job that’s been a huge part of my life. It had to be done, and it was definitely the right time.’

Many fans may be wondering just how Mick Carter will depart Albert Square life.

Fortunately, Danny has already teased what’s to come:

‘Mick’s exit is going to be a very, very powerful thing. I would love for the door to be left open and as far as I know, it is. Who knows?! When I go out there and fail miserably, I can come back with my tail between my legs and go “will you take me back?”. I just want to send out some love to EastEnders and everyone that’s associated with the show because I love you all very much.

‘It’ll be a sad year for me, but I’m also very excited about it.’
