'Chicago P.D.' Season 9 Episode 8 Promo Shows How the FBI Could Use Hailey Upton's Past Against Her

Chicago P.D. Season 9 began with Hailey Upton’s guilt and fear regarding Roy’s death. Upton shot and killed Roy, Kim Burgess’s attacker, when he went for Hank Voight’s gun in Chicago P.D. Season 8. And Voight helped get rid of the body. Now, it seems the truth about what happened may come out in Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 8. Here’s what the promo shows — and why Upton may have to delve into her troubled past.

‘Chicago P.D’ Season 9 Episode 8 promo shows the FBI questioning Hailey Upton

Viewers keeping up with Chicago P.D. Season 9 know Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton’s relationship has suffered since Roy’s death in season 8. Upton proposed to Halstead — and Halstead accepted and got down on one knee to give a traditional proposal in response. But Halstead knew something was up, as Upton stopped sleeping, eating, and acting like herself.

Finally, Halstead got the truth from Hank Voight. Voight finally told Halstead what happened to Roy and how he and Upton were involved in Roy’s killing. Halstead angrily punched Voight in response, and the rest of the Intelligence Unit could feel the rift between Halstead and Voight affecting the entire team.

Now, a new promo for Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 8 shows the FBI talking to Upton about Roy. “You know what men do. You’ve seen it your whole life,” the FBI agent says to Upton. “You saw what Roy Walton did. One woman on your team, you saw what he did to her. Roy Walton’s dead. You covered it up.”

Hailey Upton may have to face her abusive past

The beginning of the Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 8 promo shows the FBI agent giving a clue for what’s to come. While Hailey Upton’s seen horrific acts from Roy, she also lived through an abusive past.

Upton’s father, the owner of a Greek restaurant, was abusive to the entire family, which included her brothers and her mother. She delved into her past with a young suspect she hoped to receive a confession from, Pop Culture notes.

“For me, it was worse on the weekends,” Upton explained. “My dad would start drinking early, like noon. And he’d just sit around, getting more and more pissed off. My brothers and I were just kids. We wanted to have fun, and it drove him crazy. So, he’d pick a fight with my mom, saying that we were being too loud. She’d defend us because she always did. So he’d go after her. And then he’d come after us with anything he could his hands on — belt, extension cord.”

After a tragic end to the suspect, Upton later told Adam Ruzek the stories about her father really did happen. “Those were true,” she added. “He wasn’t like that all the time, sometimes he was funny and sweet. It’s a lot more complicated than people think.”

Is Hailey Upton leaving ‘Chicago P.D.’? Fans wonder what comes next

So, is Hailey Upton leaving Chicago P.D. for good? The interrogation with the FBI agent could result in Upton losing her badge or even receiving jail time for her crimes. Additionally, if she does have to delve into her past, she could decide to leave her job completely. Plus, we can’t forget about Upton and Jay Halstead’s rocky relationship. While they remain engaged, it appears all wedding planning is put on hold until the Roy dilemma is solved.

Currently, it doesn’t look like Upton has any plans to leave the Intelligence Unit, though. And actor Tracy Spiridakos hasn’t given any indication she plans on leaving the show. These are good signs we’ll continue to watch Upton through the upheaval.
