Screenwriter Jess Brownell’s remarks arrive after season two star Simone Ashley unveiled that the third season will ‘get super steamy’ which made her ‘very happy’ when she’s reading the scripts.
AceShowbiz -“Bridgerton” screenwriter Jess Brownell has sparked divided opinion among much-loved Netflix drama. Jess, a writer-producer on the period drama who will serve as showrunner on both series three and four, sparked debate after she said that she found writing The Regency romp’s very steamy sex scenes “awkward.”
Speaking to the Sunday Times, Jess shared that working on the sex scenes for the show “is one of the most awkward moments of my career.” She also admitted she didn’t want to show her boss the “detailed” drafts. “I was having fun but then I remembered my boss would read them … he had asked for them to be detailed,” she told the outlet.
Reacting to Jess’ remarks, some of “Bridgerton” fans ripped the way she and the team “glorified sex.” One person commented, “I know people love this show, but I couldn’t get past the trailer. Looked terrible. Once they throw gratuitous sex in, it means the show isn’t good.” Another echoed, “The obligatory sex scenes. Again and again and again. Cheap titillation, predictable and tedious. Stop shoving this crap in our faces.”
A third posted, “I enjoy Bridgerton, it is total historical fantasy which is fine but the gratuitous sex is completely unnecessary.” Someone noted that they “couldn’t watch anymore” as the show “ruined the books.” Another wondered “if it was so awkward then why was she writing it?”
Others, in the meantime, praised the production team and noted that they couldn’t wait for season 3. “Just watched season 2 again. Love it. Pure fantasy. Cannot wait for season 3!!” one fan remarked. Another simply said, “Great program..looking forward to it.” Someone else added, “She did a good job. Dear readers of the DM. You probably haven’t watched it all the way through. quite long for you.”
The Regency romp, which is based on a series of books of the same name by Julia Quinn, follows one of the eight Bridgerton children in each series, with season three heading to screens next year.
Season one of “Bridgerton” featured the rip-your-clothes-off attraction between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and the Duke of Hastings (Rege-Jean Page). In one scene, Rege-Jean sent fans into a frenzy simply by licking a spoon in a seductive manner.
Meanwhile, season two showcased the relationship between Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), which starts off prickly, but becomes flirtatious, leading to some serious sexual tension.
Season three is currently in the works, and it will center on Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and her long-held crush on her best friend Eloise’s (Claudia Jessie) older brother, Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
More recently, Simone teased that the third season will “get super steamy,” telling E! News, “I’m very happy when I’m reading the scripts.” She further detailed, “When I receive them, I’ve got a beaming smile on my face.” Despite remaining tight-lipped on any specific plot details, she described the season as “Polin, love and new beginnings.”
