Gerard Pique and Shakira have confirmed they have split after 11 years together.
A brief statement released by the singer’s agency said: “We regret to confirm that we are parting ways.
“For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
Their split comes as the footballer was rumoured to have been caught cheating by Shakira, although he is yet to address the speculation.
It was reported by the Spanish outlet El Periodico that the couple had been living separately for a few weeks.
The Barcelona player and iconic singer were together for 11 years but never married.
Here’s everything we know about their relationship, including why they never tied the knot.
Shakira and Pique’s relationship
Shakira and Pique first met in 2010 on the set of the Waka Waka music video, which was the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Pique caught Shakira’s attention after appearing in the music video. In an interview with 60 Minutes she said: "When I saw the video, I was like, 'Hmm, that one's kind of cute.' And then someone decided to introduce us."
The pair started dating and confirmed their relationship in 2011.
A year later, Shakira revealed they were expecting their first child together and their son Milan was born in 2013.
In 2014 they announced their second pregnancy, and Shakira gave birth to their second son Sasha in 2015.
The couple continued to enjoy family life together until recent reports sparked rumours that Shakira had caught Pique cheating on her.
The cheating allegations haven’t been confirmed, but the pair have announced their split.
Why did Shakira and Pique never get married?
Despite being together for over a decade, Shakira and Pique never ended up tying the knot.
In May, Pique opened up about why he never proposed to Shakira.
During an interview with his former Manchester United teammate, Gary Neville, Pique explained that he never felt the need to marry Shakira because it wouldn’t have changed their relationship.
He said: “No, I'm not married. It’s her mentality!
“I like it how we are right now. We have two kids, nine and seven, we work good as a couple. We don't have the need to be married, it's fine.”
Shakira also explained why she didn’t want to marry Pique in an interview with 60 Minutes in 2020.
"To tell you the truth, marriage scares the s**t out of me," she admitted.
“I don't want him to see me as the wife. I'd rather him see me as his girlfriend.”
