Barry Gibb receives knighthood at Buckingham Palace
Dolly Parton and Barry Gibb seem like an unlikely pairing, given their careers in very different music scenes. With that being said, the pair have come together to reimagine a famous Bee Gees classic. So what is the new song from Dolly and Barry, and when is it out?
Dolly Parton and Barry Gibb have teamed up for a reimagining of Bee Gees classic Words.
The song will appear on Barry’s upcoming album, Greenfields, which will see him move down a very different road.
In fact, he will be taking a leaf out of Dolly’s book, as he will be performing with many country artists such as the Queen of Country herself, as well as Alison Krauss and Little Big Town.
Words was a song from 1968, before the Bee Gees really moved into their disco phase which they have become renowned for.

Words is a song by the Bee Gees, written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb. The song reached No. 1 in Germany, Canada, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
The song became the band’s third UK top 10 hit, and was voted as one of the top five Bee Gees songs in a 2011 poll from ITV.
Since its release, the song has been performed by many other stars, such as Rita Coolidge and Irish boyband Boyzone.
In The Bee Gees: Tales of the Brothers Gibb, Robin was reported as saying about the song: “Words reflects a mood, It was written after an argument.
“Barry had been arguing with someone, I had been arguing with someone, and happened to be in the same mood. [The arguments were] about absolutely nothing.
“They were just words. That is what the song is all about; words can make you happy or words can make you sad.”
Though the song came before Barry discovered his epic falsetto which characterised many later Bee Gees hits, it certainly explored the upper end of his range.
While it is a favourite of fans, it will get a country twist in this new version, featuring a woman whose country tones match Barry’s voice in many ways.
However, this is not entirely the first time they have worked together, as Barry worked as a producer on a song which became one of Dolly’s biggest hits.
Barry helped produce Kenny Rogers’ album Eyes That See in the Dark, in his famous producing team alongside Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson.
On that album was one of Kenny’s most famous songs, as well as Dolly’s, which was their duet Islands in the Stream.
While many know Barry for disco, this experience and his own comments show how country is dear to his heart.
He said on Instagram in November 2020: “I’m a collaborator. I’m a bluegrass artist and I’m a country artist and I’m a songwriter, and I don’t care what anyone else calls me.
“I’ve dreamed of a project that would bring me together with some of the artists I admire most.”
Speaking to CBS This Morning, Barry said: “I was bitten by Nashville, you know? Because Nashville is about music; it’s about real songs.
“This is where I gotta go. This is the kind of music I love.”
The song is available to see on YouTube now, while Greenfields is slated for a January 8 release
