Whatever you’re doing this weekend, whether you’re wrapping presents or washing up mugs, it might be worth sticking on some Christmas tunes on full blast.

It might still feel early, but listening to Christmas music could be exactly what you need right now, especially this year.
That’s because festive tunes really do have the power to boost our mood.
‘Christmas songs tend to cheer us up,’ Dr Becky Spelman, a psychologist at The Private Therapy Clinic, tells Metro.co.uk. ‘They bring back fond memories of our child and stimulate excitement for the forthcoming season.
‘Bright, celebratory songs stimulate the brain, which in turn releases endorphins.’
Endorphins are those same feel-good chemicals released by exercising, hugs, and eating chocolate, so putting on a festive playlist could be a low-effort way to make you happy.
But be warned – the positive effects of Christmas music aren’t guaranteed, and you shouldn’t expect a magical mood overhaul.
If you’re feeling especially sad over Christmas 2020, Another Lonely Christmas will likely push you further into a pensive funk.
If you’re going through a breakup, you might want to avoid songs about Christmas and love.
And if you’ve ever worked a retail job over Christmas, you might need to avoid the classic songs entirely, as even one note of a tune you heard on repeat could make you overwhelmed with tension, rather than festivity.
‘I think it really does depend on the mood you’re in on any given day,’ says Becky.
‘You may feel buoyed and uplifted by a particular song on one day but should you wake up the next day feeling stressed or low, you could find that the same song in fact makes you crazy.
‘This year particularly, thousands of us have lost loved ones, so Christmas 2020 has the potential to be a very painful time for more people than usual who don’t want to hear cheerful Christmas songs.’
To put it simply, Christmas songs don’t have the power to right all wrongs, and if you’re feeling rubbish, it’s probably better to give a loved one a call for a chat rather than playing Mariah Carey bangers.
But if you fancy getting some pep in your step, put that Christmas album on loudly and proudly. Now’s not the time to be snobbish about music choices – the cheesier and more seasonal, the better, and we really could all do with a little festive cheer.
