Who is Tony Clay? Inside EastEnders’ ‘Ballum’ actor’s life away from BBC soap

Callum "Halfway" Highway is played by Tony Clay joined EastEnders in January 2018, making his debut on New Year's Day.

Since being thrown to the forefront of the BBC soap Tony has enjoyed storylines acting opposite Max Bowden, aka Ben Mitchell, who makes up the soap's most popular couples known affectionately by viewers as "Ballum".

EastEnders is the 29 year old's first soap role, but the actor is well established in theatre and even toured America with the Abbey Theatre.

When he's not playing a police officer in Walford, Tony can be found spending time with his girlfriend. Here’s his life away from the soap…

As well as EastEnders, talented Tony has appeared in 2012 film, An Ordinary Life, and The Second Coming.

He previously also appeared in Foyle’s War, playing Rex Carter in 2015.

According to Digital Spy, Tony also has a secret talent – as well as acting he is also a stand-up comedian and a tenor singer.

When Tony first joined the soap as "Halfway", the character burst on to the scene accidentally shooting Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) in a heist gone wrong.

He went on a brief break from the show before returning and falling into the arms of Whitney Dean, but then battled with his feelings for bad boy Ben Mitchell.

The onscreen couple aka Ballum realised their feelings to each other before it was too late and Callum dumped Whitney at their wedding.

Things are a little different for Tony's own love story in real life and has been dating girlfriend Olivia Griffin since August 2016.

They celebrated their first anniversary in August 2017 and he regularly posts updates from their life including a romantic trip to Venice and romantic dinners together.

Tony often pays tribute to Olivia, and gushed in one snap from back in February: "I love you more than words! Happy Valentine’s Day my girl."

While filming for EastEnders was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Tony appeared on Secrets from the Square alongside his onscreen boyfriend.

Talking about what is to come for the pair, Tony said the pair will have to navigate Callum becoming a fully-fledged police officer while Ben continues to partake in criminal activities after spending lockdown apart.

And the actor also opened up about a personal experience of lockdown, after his dad had to battle coronavirus.

"It’s been a bit of a strange time for me. My dad was hospitalised with the coronavirus. For two months in hospitals — three different hospitals," he told presenter Stacey Dooley.

"‘It was a hard hard time — on my dad, on my family, on everyone as a nation, really. Everyone going through this."

Tony shared that his dad was getting better, on the episode which aired back in July: "He is [on the mend]! Yes, he is. He’s finally home, so I’m very, very, very happy. And a bit overwhelmed by it all."
