Sarah Amelia Fogg is a makeup artist specialising in permanent makeup with @brows_by_sarah_. She explained why healthy lips are so important when it comes to looking your best, and hydration is key. Sarah told Express.co.uk: “Hydration is really underrated when it comes to your lips.

“Much like other areas, dry or cracked lips can make you look older so it’s really important to apply a hydrating lip balm every day.”

Hydration is not only important to look youthful, it’s essential for general health. Make sure you are drinking around two litres of water a day.

Sarah went on: “I also recommend exfoliating your lips to remove any dead skin cells. This can also aid with blood flow and help your lips look more youthful.”

Exfoliating your lips can be done easily at home, using items you likely already have. It’s possible to exfoliate lips with sugar mixed with oil or honey.

Make a paste and massage your lips before washing it off and using a lip balm. You could also exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush, gently massaging the bristles against your lips in circles before using a balm.

However, it’s important not to over-exfoliate your lips. Make sure you don’t scrub too hard or exfoliate more than twice a week at most.

For those after a most dramatic result, Sarah recommends semi-permanent makeup. She said: “If you want something that’s a little more low maintenance, semi-permanent lip blushing is a really popular form of semi-permanent makeup that I offer for achieving youthful-looking lips that are fuller, defined, and enhanced with pigment.

“It can last anywhere from two to three years with top-ups – results will vary depending on how well you care for your lips and how you care for them while they’re healing.”

Lip blushing works similarly to a semi-permanent tattoo. It can deepen the colour of the lip of help to emphasize the border of the lips.
