When a couple is having marital problems and going through a divorce that time can be particularly hard on their children. Prince William and Prince Harry know this first hand as Prince Charles and Princess Diana had a tumultuous marriage and separated in 1992 before divorcing four years later.
While the Prince and Princess of Wales tried to shield their sons from what was going on, it was only a matter of time before William and Harry picked up on it. Here’s how the younger prince acted towards his father on one occasion when his parents were fighting.
Prince Harry lashed out at Prince Charles
According to Princess Diana’s biographer, Andrew Morton, Prince Harry became so upset about what was going on between his folks that he lashed out and took it out on his father.
Morton wrote in his book William and Catherine: Their Lives, Their Wedding that the constant bickering happening behind the palace walls was so upsetting to Harry that he “launched an attack on his father, ineffectually beating him on the legs with his fists.”
Morton also claimed that the young prince yelled at Charles and told him, “I hate you, I hate you, you make Mummy cry.”
What their relationship is like today
Over the years, Prince Harry’s relationship with his father got much better and now it’s reportedly as strong as it’s ever been thanks in part to Meghan Markle.
Charles gets along so well with his daughter-in-law that it’s brought him and his son closer. Harry said he was extremely appreciative when his father stepped in to walk his bride down the aisle and days after the royal wedding, the Duke of Sussex delivered a speech honoring Charles at a ceremony for his 70th birthday.
Harry and Markle also spent time with the future king while vacationing at the Castle of Mey in Scotland where they read, walked dogs, and talked for hours.
What Harry’s relationship is like with Camilla
While there have been several reports over the years that William and Harry’s relationship with their father’s second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, isn’t great Harry did help her out tremendously in the court of public opinion.
Following Diana’s death, Camilla was labeled as public enemy No. 1. She and Charles worked to try and gain acceptance but it was what Harry said that helped her win a good amount of approval.
During an interview prior to his 21st birthday, the prince spoke fondly of his stepmother and called her “wonderful.”
“[She’s] a wonderful woman and she’s made our father very, very happy, which is the most important thing”, the prince said, adding, “William and I love her to bits. To be honest with you, she’s always been very close to me and William… but no, she’s not the wicked stepmother. I’ll say that right now.”
