This Christmas, we decided to do an advent calendar with a difference, where instead of opening a treat, you get a random act of kindness to do each day.
After you’ve revealed your chocolate or beauty product counting down to Christmas, you can do a good deed and make someone’s day in the meantime.
You’ll spread festive cheer, get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing you helped someone else, and ensure you remain on the nice list for another year – what’s not to love?
Behind the advent door today is a hidden present – and we don’t mean the ones at the back of your parents’ wardrobe.
Day 11: Leave something special in a hidden place
Today’s act of kindness: Hide a message or keepsake for someone to find.
We all know of time capsules and messages in bottles, and many of us have dreamed of finding one.
For today’s random act of kindness, we’re asking you to make that dream come true for someone else, hiding ‘treasure’ to be unearthed at a later date.
Wherever you are, leave a message, keepsake, or little treat in a hidden (but not too hidden) place locally. When a passer-by spots it they’ll get to read what you wrote or enjoy the gift, along with getting that special feeling that only comes with making a discovery.
You might wrap up an ornament with a handwritten note attached or put some Christmas cards around your village for others to find. If you have extra time on your hands you could even make a proper scavenger hunt with directions and maps.
For those who want to ensure their hidden gem doesn’t stay hidden, Geocaching might be a handy option instead of leaving the find to chance.
Users can log the location of a hidden item via the Geocaching app for intrepid searchers to uncover. There’s a code of conduct requiring items to be put back how they’re found, so the fun can continue for ages to come. Find out more here.
Christmas is a particularly magical time of year, but you can make that magic all year round with a little ingenuity.
