Labor senator Kimberley Kitching dies from heart attack

Labor Senator Kimberley Kitching has died from a heart attack in news that has left her colleagues distraught.

Labor caucus members were stunned when colleagues including Labor leader Anthony Albanese were told of her sudden death on Thursday.

Kitching, 52, led a push in Parliament to pass new laws to seize the assets of individuals who had committed human rights abuses around the world.

The new powers, known as “Magnitsky laws” after Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, have been part of the armoury used by the federal government to impose sanctions on prominent Russian oligarchs in response to the war in Ukraine.

Colleagues on both sides of politics had praised Kitching for leading the push to pass the laws.
