A night that could have been a sad memory for one young woman ended up being a huge and happy celebration, thanks to caring locals who saved the day.
The teenager, who has been named only as Jessica, was celebrating her 15th birthday, or quinceanera. This is a bigger deal than most birthdays, as in Mexican culture the age of 15 is said to mark the passage into womanhood.
Despite inviting 100 guests, however, only 10 showed up on the day itself.
The incident took place in Tampico, which is a city in the state of Tamaulipas in north-eastern Mexico.
Jessica had decorated the room, picked out her dress, chosen the music, and had her parents by her side. Yet without friends around her to share the event, the schoolgirl was devastated.
That’s when party planner ‘Yuli Medina’ posted on Facebook looking for help, turning the day – and Jessica’s spirits – around in the process.
Seeing the teen’s mother consoling her over the snub gave the hospitality worker an idea, and he took to social media to see what could be done.
His post read: ‘Girls and boys, a favour. We are inviting you to Jessica’s quinceanera party, she’s very sad, no one showed up… Come and have fun, your presence will make a girl happy!’
The post quickly picked up attention, and in a matter of minutes people started showing up at the party.
Most of the people attending were residents in the area, but they were also reportedly joined by singers, comedians, and local shop owners who wanted to give the birthday girl a present on her big day.
The party turned out to be more than Jessica and her family had hoped for, despite its rocky start.
They had one DJ who was expected to play music, who was quickly superseded by the live bands and stand-up comedians who showed up.
In total, 150 people showed up to the party that had been planned for 100 people, according to local media. She has also received thousands of happy birthday messages from around the world on Facebook.
Well done to these last-minute guests, whose kindness meant Jessica had a night to remember.
