TYING the knot can cost a lot – including for the guests. Those attending a wedding fork out an average of £50 to £75 for a present, says a survey by wedding website hitched.co.uk.
Added to all the other costs of being a guest, you have got a huge hit to your wallet. But there are ways you can treat the newlyweds without breaking the bank.
Hatch a plan. Little things count — and personalised matching egg cups are sure to raise a smile for newlyweds. I like the wooden pair from urbanfoxgifts.com for £8.95. You can add the couple’s surname and date of their wedding. They are a steal compared to ceramic versions available at notonthehighstreet.com for £22.
Clique and save. Arranging a joint gift could save you pounds. Use a website such as prezola.com to share the cost, making extra-special, luxury items more affordable. For example, gather eight pals, then choose a gift for £80 at the website and split it between you all for as little as a tenner each. Or raise cash as a group on crowdfunding sites such as gofundme.com. Start a campaign for the bride and groom and share it on social media.
SAVING: £70 if sharing the cost among eight pals
Made you clink. Who doesn’t like a glass of fizz and a chocolate? At moonpig.com, you can personalise a prosecco bottle with the happy couple’s wedding date, plus a box of Guylian chocolates, for £25. A similar set from regencyhampers.com costs £54.40.
Date night. After the wedding and honeymoon the newlyweds may be watching their budget, so maybe give the gift of a date night or dinner for two. Websites such as groupon.co. uk have some fantastic deals across the country. I found a great offer for fondue with a bottle of wine for two for just £25, down from £42.50.
