IT’S been holiday hell for Thomas Cook travellers this week after the firm went bust on Sunday.
The collapse prompted a huge Government repatriation programme to bring back more than 150,000 stranded tourists.
If you had a package holiday booked with the firm in the next few weeks, you should be ATOL-protected and entitled to a refund.
But what do you do now with that time off work? Here are some cost-savvy ideas. . .
STAY IN THE UK: Ask around to see if someone at work or a neighbour/friend has a holiday rental you could use and still get away for less. Also compare websites such as Homestay.com and Airbnb.
A UK break means you can use the car or if you travel by train, you could save if you go as a group. South Western Railway offers 34 per cent off adult tickets when three to nine people travel together.
HEAD FOR SOME TLC: A UK spa break could be just the ticket to wind down after the stressful situation without forking out. Lastminute.com has a section offering spa breaks for less than £100.
Spaseekers.com also has a page dedicated to pampering packages under £100, as well as discounted extras, to make things seem a little more special — for example 20 per cent off spa lunches or afternoon tea at certain facilities.
FAMILY FUN: Head to Wowcher and Groupon for family days out for less. Groupon is running an offer for two Odeon cinema tickets for £10 or Paintballing deals from £5pp.
GRAB ’N’ GO: If you still want to make a break for sunshine, Travelzoo.com and Icelolly.com both have a great late deals section where you can pick up a trip for less.
Currently you can still get five nights in Sicily for £150pp via Travelzoo. Some travel sites are including extras that could cut the total cost if you still want to make a break for it this month.
Teletextholidays.co.uk is offering free transfers and room upgrades on certain holidays and at the moment you can get seven nights’ self-catering in the Algarve from £167pp.
