The guests allegedly threw plates and furniture at each other and there was "blood everywhere", a qitness said.

The fight broke out following a "patriotic" black-tie event on board the cruise ship on Thursday evening with "large amounts of alcohol consumed", reporter Richard Gaisford said on Twitter .

According to a witness at the scene, passengers were upset after one guest dressed up as a clown despite the ship's no fancy dress code.

The scuffle soon turned violent after guests began throwing objects at each other within reach, as members of staff frantically tried to stop the chaos.

The ship reached its final leg of a week long cruise to Norway's fjords and was en route back to its Southampton port when the incident occurred.

GMTV's chief correspondent Richard Galsford tweeted: "'There was blood everywhere.' Witnesses told me they were so frightened they had to hide, as family groups fought.
