SAY the words ‘bean bag’ and what springs to mind? An extra seat for a living room or snug?
Maybe a large colourful number for a kids’ room that can double up as an extra bed? Or, a lightweight seat you can drag from inside to out and use to enjoy the sunshine?
Whether you want it as spot to read, an extra seat for movie night, or a spot on which to snooze in the sunshine, there’s a design that will be right for you.
Before you buy, think about what your bean bag is going to be used for predominantly. Will it be outside? If so, choose one that’s showerproof. Want it for the kids? Make sure it’s robust enough and not easy to mark. Need a seat-come-footstool? Pick a sturdy design without a back.
Most bean bags are filled with polystyrene balls, but some versions are more ‘packed’ than others, so if you can get to try before you buy then it’s a good idea to.
to avoid fights, why not choose a double-seat design or let the kids pick their own colours so they each get their own?
Want the down-low on these lowdown buys? Then here's our pick of the best bean bags on the block.

- Ayra Bean Bag, £99 from Made – buy here
It looks like a chair. And by no means is it round. However, that does not mean that the Ayra is not a bean bag – it’s just a slightly more luxe and deliciously stylish version.
Made from polyester and filled with polystyrene beads, this lightweight design measures 78cm in height and 95cm in width, and is available in a range of different fabrics – including this antique gold velvet.

3. Best outdoor bean bag
- Indoor/Outdoor Double Beanbag, £295 from Cox & Cox – buy here
Scroll any interiors site and you’re sure to read about the whole ‘bringing the outdoors in’ ethos.
Well, with this clever beanbag, you can do that by means of your seating. Ideal for enjoying the sunshine in the summer or as a movie-night snuggler in the winter, this sofa-style design is something of a showstopper.
There’ll be no arguments over the kids hogging it as it seats more than one, and as it’s made from splash-proof fabric, you won’t have to worry if it’s left out in a light shower.
Measuring 62cm in height and 130cm in depth, we can already see ourselves here, curled up in the garden at the end of a beautiful summer’s day.
4. Best durable bean bag
- Jumbo Cord Bean Bag, £39 from JD Williams – buy here
If you know in advance that your bean bag is likely to be dived into and dragged around, you’ll no doubt be after something a little more robust.
May we introduce you to the Jumbo Cord, which may be totally comfy, good-looking and soft to the touch, but don’t let that fool you – it’s hardier than you’d think due to its cord material.
It measures 77cm diameter and comes in seven different colours, including this smart dark navy design – and we’d imagine a dark colour like this would be ideal for hiding any marks made by the kids (or big kids). Plus it comes at a great price, so you don’t have to spend big bucks on something that’s likely to be well used.
5. Best grey bean bag
- Barley Bean Bag, £68 from John Lewis – buy here
Aches and pains don’t always make the best partners for bean bags, but that’s not to say there isn’t one to suit those with a bad back.
The Barley, for example, has handy support, which makes you feel as though you’re in a chair while still offering the relaxed seating you’d get with a regular bean bag.
Made from polyester, this smart little number measures 100cm in height and 80cm diameter – and although it comes in Denim Blue and Steel, we like this natural colour for blending seamlessly into a scheme.
6. Best giant bean bag
- Fatboy The Original Bean Bag, £169 from Amara – buy here
It calls itself the ‘original’ bean bag and although we don’t know about that, the Fatboy is certainly the ultimate.
Its large size (H180 x W140) makes it a versatile piece that’s ideal for sitting, laying and, in some cases, even for sleeping on. Ideal for the garden, it’s made from high-quality nylon with a PVC coating that repels both dirt and moisture, and it can easily be spot cleaned when needed.
It’s not cheap, but it is hard-wearing, and the amount of colours it’s available in make choosing the one for you lots of fun.
