Saoirse Kennedy Hill’s father faces fear to honor late daughter

Though Saoirse Kennedy Hill may be gone, her memory continues to inspire.

Her dad Paul Hill conquered two of his biggest fears in honor of his late daughter, and the whole thing was documented on Instagram by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“Saoirse’s Dad, Paul Hill, has a terror of both heights and water,” he captioned the post shared Thursday.

The multi-image post included a photo of Paul Hill leaping off the top of a large buoy with his hands in the air.

Hill’s father is one of four falsely convicted in the 1974 Irish Republican Army bombings of two pubs.

“Having grown up in the catholic ghetto of the Falls Road in Belfast, and spent most of his adult life in 38 British prisons, he never learned to swim,” Kennedy Jr., 65, wrote. “Nevertheless,he wanted to jump off the HH buoy in Saoirse’s honor.”

A second photo showed Hill landing in the water as his family watched from the base of the buoy.

“He asked us to be there to rescue him when he hit the water,” Kennedy Jr. wrote.

Kennedy Jr. labeled the second photo “Baptized.” He called the third photo, which shows a smiling Hill raising a fist in the air in the water with family, “Rescue.”

Other photos in the post showed Saoirse throughout her life with various relatives and friends. Some of the moments captured include the late 22-year-old sitting in a car on Thanksgiving, enjoying a slip-n-slide and sailing.

Kenney Jr. recalled his niece’s free spirit in his eulogy, which he published in full on Medium Wednesday.

“From the beginning she had a kind of endearing recklessness that made her life a series of embarrassing predicaments,” Kennedy Jr. said, recalling Hill’s childhood. “At the apex of each of these episodes, she was at the height of her powers.”
