Welp, there’s yet another dramatic and incredibly thirsty royal biography coming out, this time all about the ~life and times~ of Prince Philip. And at 99 years old, you better believe this royal has seen some things.
Prince Philip Revealed: A Man of His Century author Ingrid Seward just spoke to Us Weekly about Philip’s role in Prince Charles’ marriage, and said that Charles “felt he’d been very pushed into marrying” Diana by his dad.
“He told some of his friends that he felt pressurized into marrying Diana because Philip said, ‘You’ve either got to marry her or let her go. You can’t string a … young girl [along]. She’s only 19. You can’t string her along.’ And all the press is saying, ‘Oh, this is going to be the next queen.’ You’ve got to take a stand and say that this is not going to work, or you marry her.”
Seward added that Charles was “frightened of his father” and “he probably thought, ‘Well, OK. I’ll marry her if that’s what you want me to do.’”
As a reminder, Charles and Diana got married in 1981, but the relationship didn’t work and they separated in 1992. Their marriage, and Prince Philip’s involvement, will be chronicled in Netflix’s upcoming season of The Crown. Ya know, just in case you’re in the mood for some fictionalized royal history.
