Piers Morgan brands Johnny Depp and Amber Heard whiny wastrels amid libel trial

Piers Morgan has branded Hollywood actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard “self-obsessed whiny wastrels” amid their ongoing legal battle.

Johnny, 58, and Amber, 35, married in 2015 but just one year later, they split acrimoniously as Amber claimed Johnny had been violent towards her, filing for divorce and a temporary restraining order.

In the months that followed, the former couple engaged in a war of words via the press and when their divorce was finalised in 2017, Amber pledged to split her $7 million settlement payment between a children's hospital she was patron of and a domestic violence charity.

Amber later penned a Washington Post op-ed about experiencing domestic violence and while she didn't name the alleged perpetrator, Johnny launched a $50m libel lawsuit against her, claiming the article damaged his career and prevented him from getting roles.

After a long wait, the case is now being heard in a US court – but Piers Morgan isn't impressed by the ex-couple.

Withthe pair’s trial having begun earlier this week, Piers, 57, shared his thoughts on the two actors in a New York Post column.

He wrote: "I can honestly say that the number of f***s I give about this shamelessly deluded and self-obsessed pair of whiny wastrels could be written on the back of Mycoplasma genitalium, the planet’s smallest living organism and, appropriately, a parasitic bacterium that lives in our waste disposal organs.

"As Depp and Heard’s latest legal battle kicks off in a Virginia court, we’re once again being forced to endure disgustingly ugly details of how much they hate each other and how horrendously they both behaved during a relationship that even by Hollywood standards was spectacularly awful," Piers went on.

In response to Johnny's lawsuit, Amber filed a $100m counterclaim accusing him of creating a "smear campaign against her".

This is Johnny’s second explosive trial on issues relating to his relationship with Amber, after he sued News Group Newspapers Ltd, publishers of The Sun, for libel over an article calling him a "wife beater".

In a landmark ruling, Johnny lost a judge ruled that the article in question was “substantially true”, deeming that 12 out of 14 of Amber's allegations had taken place.

The explosive trial heard how heard Amber was in “fear for her life” during several encounters with the actor.

Johnny appealed the case but this was denied. He then went on to begin his defamation trial against Amber in Virginia — where The Washington Post is published — after his legal team urged for the case to be fought there.

While we're just days into the trial, it has already become a bitter war between the two ex-partners with. In the opening statements, Amber's attorney detailed an allegation of sexual assault before Johnny's lawyers claimed his ex is a "compulsive liar".

The 58 year old’s legal team acknowledged his previous use of drugs and alcohol, but said that doesn’t make him “an abuser.
