Paul Gascoigne’s, 54, son Regan Gascoigne, 26, is currently preparing for his debut on this evening’s Dancing on Ice. Despite the pair’s previously turbulent relationship, in a new interview, Paul has admitted he feels “lucky” to have such a “special” bond with his son over their mutual battle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

I’ve got OCD and he’s got it too.

Paul has had a very strained relationship with his children Bianca and Regan in the past due to his alcohol addiction and mental health struggles.

The former footballer has admitted that they “never talk about the past” and hang out as “mates” in order to keep their relationship intact.

Speaking to The Sun, Paul revealed how “lucky” he is to share such a special bond with Regan due to their shared experience with OCD.

According to the NHS, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental health condition where a person has obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.

Paul said: “I’ve got OCD and he’s got it too. When I used to go and see him, if he wound us up I’d open all the cupboard doors to annoy him, because I knew he’d have to go round shutting them.”

The footballer recalled the England manager Terry Venables “going mad” as he would go on the pitch and have to leave to tie his laces again, just on one foot.

He also admitted that he doesn’t wear “pants on the pitch either”.

While discussing their experiences with OCD, the Dancing on Ice star said: “When Dad comes to mine he ruins my house. So when I go to his, I move everything too.

“We know it annoys each other. At work, as soon as I enter the theatre, I’ve got to do everything in an order, including touching door handles and stuff.”

Continuing talking about their new relationship, Paul said: “When we get together we just feel like we’ve never been away from each other.

“Now we hang out as mates. It’s special, I feel lucky.”

Paul previously walked out on Regan when he was a baby, after a string of rows with his ex-wife Sheryl, 56.

Regan has previously shared his regrets after saying in a 2013 documentary that he wanted his father out of his life.

His sister Bianca and brother Mason also spoke on the documentary about trying to deal with a life without their father, who was in the grips of his drink and drug addiction.

During a previous interview with The Sun, the dancer said: “We have such a good relationship.

“There have been ups and downs, but that is all water under the bridge. It’s love, love, love now.”

Regan is currently favourite to win Dancing on Ice due to his background in performing arts and musical theatre.

He’s been interested in performing arts since he was six and became a ballet dancer at the age of eight in the Hammond Ballet School

The Dancing on Ice star then went on to study Musical Theatre at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts.

You can watch Dancing on Ice tonight on ITV at 6.30pm
