Oscars 2021 aired its 93rd ceremony as part of a socially distanced event from London and Los Angeles tonight. Films which took home trophies included Nomadland, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Father and Sound of Metal.
Winners of the night sparked controversy on Twitter after many noticed Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman didn’t win anything.
Viola was nominated for best actress for her role in a Rainey’s Black Bottom.
The actress was up for the gong alongside Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby, Carey Mulligan and winner Frances McDormand.
In the category for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Chadwick Boseman was nominated for his character Levee Green.
The late actor faced competition from Riz Ahmed, Gary Oldman, Steven Yeun and winner Anthony Hopkins.
Fans of the show have since expressed their anger at the pair being snubbed.
One commented: “So we’re really gonna snub Viola Davis AND Chadwick Boseman? That’s crazy.”
Another shared a GIF of a man crying with the caption: “Me seeing Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis being robbed at the Oscars.”

A fourth wrote: “VIOLA DAVIS DESERVED BETTER #Oscars.”
Chadwick died last year following a battle with cancer aged 43.
Viola spoke out about her late co-star in a tribute ahead of the show.

She told E!: “He was authenticity on steroids.
“Sometimes people honour people who actually were not very nice or [for whom] the persona did not match the real person.
“This… it matches the person, I’m telling you. This person, this human being, this artist, did not mistake his presence for the event.
“He absolutely honoured the work.”
Elsewhere, Jo Brand was amongst the fans who believed he deserved the award for Best Actor.
