Kerry Katona speaks out about horrific domestic abuse from George Kay

Kerry Katona has opened up about the horrific abuse she faced at the hands of ex-husband George Kay.

The former Atomic Kitten star, 42, was married to Kay for three years from 2014, welcoming daughter Dylan-Jorge together.

However behind closed doors violence was rife in the relationship, with Katona speaking out about what she went through in her upcoming memoir, Kerry Katona: Whole Again.

Kay died in 2019, after the Rugby League player reportedly ate ‘a ball of cocaine’ at a Holiday Inn in Cheshire.

In quotes obtained by The Sun the new book sees Katona candidly speaking about the domestic abuse, including when she was pregnant with their child.

‘Even as my stomach grew, he would push me over, kick me and spit in my face,’ she wrote.

‘Soon after he’d apologise, tell me how much he loved me and gently let me know it was all my fault because I pushed his buttons. And then I’d be the one apologising.’

In another section, she recalls how Kay – who she had known since she was a teenager – strangled her and beat her while he was driving.

Katona explained they had been to a house viewing where she told George and the landlord a story about Bryan Adams urging her to eat her vegetables, and jokingly feeding her broccoli off a fork.

‘There was nothing sexual or romantic about that moment with Bryan,’ she explained.

‘It was just a jokey exchange between two people who had just met and were getting along well — in front of their significant others.

‘But George didn’t see it that way. We left the house-viewing quickly, got in the car and as he drove off he had one hand on the steering wheel and one around my neck.’

She said she could ‘barely breathe’ and thought she was ‘done for,’ when he finally released his grip and pulled the car over.

Kay ‘opened the passenger side door and dragged me out of the car by my hair,’ Katona said. ‘I fell, hitting my head on the door. He spat on me, got back in the car and drove off.’

Katona said her husband beat her every day, showering her with physical and verbal abuse, including the day before her Big Reunion show with fellow Atomic Kittens.

The pair split in 2017, with Kay dying two years later.

Katona also shares Molly, 21, and Lily-Sue, 19, with ex-husband and former Westlife member Brian McFadden, as well as Maxwell, 13, and Hedi, 15, with ex Mark Croft.

She is currently engaged to fiance Ryan Mahoney, a personal trainer, with the pair meeting five years ago on dating app Bumble.

Kerry Katona: Whole Again is out on October 15.
