Superstar Jennifer Lawrence apparently has better luck in showbiz than in real estate. Recently selling her penthouse in New York City, the Silver Linings Playbook star had to take a big loss in order to unload the property.
‘Dark Phoenix’ star ties the knot
In October 2019, Lawrence headed to the altar with art dealer Cooke Maroney. Holding the ceremony at the Belcourt of Newport mansion in Rhode Island, the two announced their engagement just eight months prior.
Lawrence spoke about her upcoming nuptials with Maroney during a podcast interview. “I definitely wasn’t at a place where I was like, ‘I’m ready to get married,’” Lawrence revealed on Naked With Catt Sadler. “I just met Cooke and I wanted to marry him … We wanted to commit fully.”
Admitting she was “too lazy to be neurotic,” Lawrence was able to pick the necessities in an instant. “I like saw a dress I liked. I said, ‘Oh, that’s the dress,’” she explained, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “I saw a venue, and I was like, ‘Cool, we got the venue.’” A-list guests for the event included Adele, Amy Schumer, and Emma Stone.
“I want to legally bind him to me forever,” Lawrence said. “And fortunately the paperwork exists for such a thing. It’s the greatest. You find your favorite person on the planet and, you’re like, ‘You can’t leave!’ So I wanted to take that offer.”
Jennifer Lawrence’s Upper East Side penthouse
According to Architectural Digest, Lawrence bought her sprawling Manhattan penthouse on the Upper East Side in August 2016 for $15.6 million. The lavish home included three bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, a formal dining area, and two lounge spaces. Measuring at 4,073 square feet with an additional 3,000 feet outdoors, the luxurious property offered 360-degree views of the city with floor-to-ceiling windows.
Variety released some photos at the two-story home, which boasted a custom built kitchen inside as well as an outdoor kitchen complete with built-in grill and ping-pong table.
Known as The Laurel in NYC’s Lenox Hill, the 30-story building comes with amenities expected in a luxury complex. Perks included a concierge, two-story gym with a lap pool, sauna, steam room, theater, game room, and paparazzi-proof garage. Charges for these benefits totaled over $5,700 month, and adding on taxes and insurance, Lawrence apparently decided it wasn’t worth the price tag.
JLaw takes a financial hit
Lawrence has been shopping the big-ticket property since July 2019, when she listed it for $15.45 million. According to Top Ten Real Estate Deals, she soon lowered the price to $14.25 million and stuck with $12 million in November.
Variety reports that tax records filed in late July reveal Lawrence sold the penthouse for $9.9 million. Calculating other fees like closing costs, the Oscar winner took over a $5.7 million loss on the sale.
Perhaps Lawrence wanted to simplify her life or downsize her space. The Passengers star has always gravitated towards life outside of Hollywood, telling Vogue in 2013 that she still wasn’t used to fame.
“I am just a normal girl and a human being, and I haven’t been in this long enough to feel like this is my new normal,” Lawrence said. “I’m not going to find peace with it.”
With a reported net worth of $130 million, Lawrence is most likely taking the loss in stride.
