Kevin Clifton, 39, has said that he does not think the dance error in Week 9 of Strictly Come Dancing was Giovanni Pernice’s, 31, fault. Giovanni and his partner Rose Ayling Ellis, 36, performed the Quickstep to Love is an Open Door, with a minor mistake happening at the end of the routine.
But it wasn’t though was it?
Speaking on his podcast The Kevin Clifton Show, Kevin revealed that he did not think Giovanni should have taken responsibility for the mistake in his routine.
Discussing when he was paired with Susanna Reid, he told his sister Joanne Clifton that he had a similar mistake to Rose and Giovanni’s.
Joanna said: “Giovanni said it was his fault though.”
Kevin swiftly responded: “But it wasn’t though was it?
“I watched it back and it wasn’t. Like, I know what he was trying to do and it was very nice of him to do that, to try and take the hit rather than her.
“But, looking back as a professional, it was Rose who did it.”
He continued: “I know we don’t want it to be because we love Rose so much, we are so reluctant to say she did anything wrong.”
In regards to the performance in question, Giovanni told judges there was a mistake during their hop sequence.
He told host Claudia Winkleman that the pair had struggled with remaining in sync during the particular element, while he also told the judges that he made the mistake, not Rose.
Rose backed this up, telling Giovanni it was fine and that she enjoyed herself regardless.
Giovanni however was visibly frustrated, despite even getting a 10 for the dance from Cynthia Erivo.
Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas pointed out the mistake in their judges’ feedback.
Motsi said: “There was a tiny, tiny Minnie Mouse mistake…”
Giovanni put his hands up and admitted: “Mine. Yes it was my mistake.”
Motsi added: “It was tiny. Everything else was up there and it was just a joy to watch.”
Despite the error, Motsi and Shirley still gave the pair an impressive nine, with Rose still encouraging Giovanni about the score.
The pair also laughed off romance talks too, as Motsi asked if she could be invited to their wedding after a proposal during the routine.
She said: “I felt the joy.I felt the joy when you said yes to the wedding.
“I hope I get an invitation, guys. Call me.”
Rose and Giovanni have been excelling each week, even scoring the earliest 40 in the history of the show.
You can watch the Quarter Finals of Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday on BBC One at 6.40pm.
