Hilary Duff Has Already Taught Her 8-Year-Old Son About Periods: 'It's Not Something to Be Grossed Out By'

Hilary Duff was a cultural icon in the early 2000s. She appeared on the hit show Lizzie McGuire as the title character and quickly gained fans all over the world.

These days, Duff is no longer the teenage Lizzie McGuire many people know her as. She is in her 30s and has a family of her own. Duff has also shared with the public some of her adventures in parenting her young children. She recently revealed that she has taught her 8-year-old son about periods.

Hilary Duff has 2 kids

Duff has two children: Luca (born 2012) and Banks (born 2018).

Luca was born while Duff was still married to her ex-husband, hockey player Mike Comrie. Duff and Comrie were married from 2010 to 2016.

In 2017, Duff began dating songwriter Matthew Koma. She gave birth to Banks in 2018 and married Koma in 2019.

Hilary Duff makes sure her son knows about periods

Like many parents, Duff tries to educate her children on a lot of things. In an interview promoting eco-friendly feminine products from Veeda, Duff revealed she wants to remove the stigma surrounding periods.

“There’s a stigma around talking about your period and buying products — in the aisle, you just grab it quick and throw it in your cart,” Duff told InStyle. “Now I feel like I have such a responsibility [to change that] because I realize how stupid it is for girls to feel embarrassed about something that’s completely natural and that creates life. Especially now that I have a daughter, I just feel a big responsibility.”

A part of her work also involves making her sure her 8-year-old son understands that periods are.

“I think the conversation starts with the whole family,” she said. “Luca knows what a period is already, he knows what a tampon looks like and what I have to do and he knows all that comes along with your period — that a woman has a period because women can create life and it’s not something to joke about or be grossed out by.”

Duff added, “I think it’s important to not just share this information with girls. It’s important that young boys, you know, turning into guys, are really well educated on it as well.”

What else do we know about Hilary Duff’s parenting style?

Duff has been quite open about some highs and lows of parenting young kids. For example, she shared with Cosmopolitan in April 2020 that taking care of children during a pandemic can leave one tired out.

“Honestly, most days are good. I’ve had like three really hard days where I feel really low and I feel so burnt and so tired of my kids, you know? Kids are annoying, I’m not going to lie,” she shared. “When I get in bed every single night and we’re like, ‘Oh my god, do we hate our kids or what?’ And then we wake up and the next day’s a new day and we’re like, ‘We‘re so freaking grateful for our kids.’”

Duff is also hands-on with her kids. She often takes Luca to school and picks him up at the end of the day.

However, Duff also makes sure to not push herself too hard. She told the Huffington Post in 2018, “[After Luca was born,] I felt that I had to do everything. If I wasn’t the one doing everything, then I was not being the best mom I could be. I think throughout the journey of being his mom, I’ve learned how to prioritize a little bit better and not spread myself so thin.”

At the end of the day, it’s clear Duff loves being a mom and fans always seem excited to follow her adventure.
