Good Morning Britain bosses have reportedly chosen Ben Shephard to replace Piers Morgan on the ITV morning show.

Ben, 46, is reportedly regarded as a “safe option” after Piers, 55, made Ofcom history with his furious rants on Meghan Markle after her interview with Oprah.

Piers quit the show earlier this month after storming off the set during a on-air argument with Alex Beresford.

It’s understood Ben will co-host the programme alongside Susanna Reid from Monday to Wednesday until September, when bosses will asses how the partnership is being received by viewers.

A source told Mail on Sunday: “ITV and GMB bosses were totally unprepared for Piers going… Nobody had a back-up plan.

“Ben, who is adored by the staff and much of the audience, stepped in and the thought is now that he will work long term…”

The publication reported that Ben is seen as the “safest option” as he's the “consummate professional”.

OK! online has contacted ITV for comment. Ben, who recently shared a rare photo of his wife, was tipped to replace Piers on the ITV news show earlier this morn.

Ben was the bookies' favourite to replace Piers on the panel at 9/2, with Adil Ray at 6/1, and weatherman Alex Beresford and Wednesday's stand-in host Ranvir Singh both at 8/1.

He currently hosts the show on Thursday and Friday mornings alongside Susanna Reid and Kate Garraway respectively.

Luke Tarr, Head of PR at Star Sports, exclusively told OK! online: “Ben Shephard has emerged as the strong frontrunner to replace Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, and punters are now backing him at 9/2 to take over permanently.

“Ben has previous experience in that role, filling in for Piers on numerous occasions, and has showed good chemistry with fellow presenters Susanna Reid and Charlotte Hawkins, so it would be on obvious choice for ITV.

“At a time when the show needs stability and viewers need a familiar friendly face, Ben is the right person to offer that.

“It might mean that we'll see less controversy on the breakfast show in the immediate future, but it'd be good in the long run for GMB.”

Although, while he hosted GMB alongside Susanna, 50, last week, the pair were hit with controversy as Patsy Palmer cut her interview short.

After Patsy tuned in for the interview via video link from her home in Malibu, she noticed the description on the bottom of the screen read: “Patsy Palmer: Addict to Wellness Guru”.

Clearly unimpressed, she said: “You know what actually, I don’t even want to do this interview because I don’t even want to look at what it says at the bottom of that screen.”

She then added: “So I’m just going to switch off, do a real Piers Morgan and just say, it’s not okay to have 'addict to wellness guru' at the bottom of the screen.”

Ben and Susanna apologised to the former EastEnders star, but she continued: “My issues that I had years ago were…

“It was talked about by me many many years ago and it's over now. So don't worry about it but I don't really want to talk to you now.”
