Gogglebox stars Giles Wood and Mary Killen are firm favourites on the Channel 4 show thanks to the couple’s on-screen banter. But Giles seemingly caused a stir on last night’s episode after he took aim at his other half while the pair watched a show on Netflix.

The married couple sat down to watch the Netflix documentary My Octopus Teacher which featured a man who became unusually close to the eight-limbed jellyfish.

Unfortunately, the octopus sadly died after it had given birth.

During the programme, Giles took a cheeky jibe at Mary’s expense which left viewers shocked.

With the octopus slowly dying on screen, Gogglebox’s Lee explained: “So you have sex, have baby, and then pop your clogs.

Giles and Mary then appeared on the screen, with the former taking a swipe.

“She’s served her purpose,” Giles remarked, following the film’s ending.

Mary commented: “Oh that’s sad though.”

“And yet you’re still alive,” Giles quipped.

The cheeky comeback left viewers divided as many people flocked to social media over the jibe.

One wrote: “Bit brutal Giles!”

Another agreed: “FFS Giles. ‘She’s served her purpose, yet you’re still alive!’”

“OMG Giles,” another declared while a fourth added: “Savage!”

Others certainly saw the humorous side, as one penned: “Lol love Giles and Mary, so dark but yet so funny #Gogglebox.”

Another commented: “Omg Mary and Giles are hilarious when talking about the guy and the octopus! Had us in stitches!”

Meanwhile, Mary previously opened up about her relationship with Giles and credits the Channel 4 show for “saving their marriage”.

Mary explained: “Giles and I were like ships that pass in the night; I got up early, he went to bed late and we rarely even ate together.

“Sitting down and watching television reminded us how much we enjoyed the same jokes.”

The couple, who are in their 50s, have two grown-up children.

They first met more than three decades ago at Wimbledon College of Art where Giles was a student.

Opening up about their relationship, Mary added to The Telegraph: “We call each other ‘nutty’ because we both consider the other to be a bit mad.

“Certainly Giles has multiple personality disorder so he’s all sorts of people and one of them is a bit of a genius. The truth is we’re both neurotic.”
