Gethin Jones, 43, told Strictly Come Dancing pro Oti Mabuse, 31, about his and ex-fiancé Katherine Jenkins’ romance during an appearance on Oti’s podcast, The Rhythm Of Life. The former Blue Peter presenter explained how his time on Strictly in 2007 shaped their relationship.
He said: “It was weird for me as I met someone as you know on the show and that was bizarre, because she was super high profile and I hadn’t experienced any kind of fame.
“I had gone from Blue Peter to the biggest show on telly dating, you know, a world famous singer.”
Katherine performed on the dance programme while Gethin was taking part in the contest.
The Morning Live presenter went on to tell Oti how TV personality Claudia Winkleman, 49, offered him advice on his budding relationship.
He said: “I remember being in Claudia Winkleman’s dressing room going, ‘Oh my God, everyone’s talking about us in the press’.
“And she was literally like, ‘Don’t worry about it, it’ll pass’.
“And I was like, ‘No, you don’t understand. They are talking about us in the press’.
“Obviously she knew way more than me at the time was brilliant to me, just saying, ‘Don’t worry, don’t worry’.
“It was pretty weird.
“It took a lot of self confidence from being able to express myself dancing but everything sort of changed with this relationship developing.”
During the candid conversation, Gethin also revisited his beginnings as a presenter.
He started his television career in the early 2000s by presenting children’s programmes, including Welsh channel S4C’s Uned 5.
But Gethin began to enjoy some fame when he joined BBC’s flagship kids’ series Blue Peter.
Discussing his salary, Gethin said: “I didn’t even know how much I was getting paid when I first joined. I didn’t care.”
Gethin continued: “Yes, absolutely. I took a pay cut.
“I didn’t realise it was a pay cut.”
Gethin described his time filming the show as a “magnificent” experience.
He said: “Blue Peter was the most magnificent, unreal, surreal, amazing experience I could possibly imagine.
“Three and a half years, 31 countries, six broken bones, 4 world records, two lifetime ambitions – and it doesn’t even tell half of the story.
“The biggest thing with me was the people that we met around the world. Just phenomenal.”
